The first corporation to create a street legal fully self driving car will become the company to dominate the transportation industry. As both driving technology and AI leaps forward, this future seems closer and closer with every passing day. An autonomous vehicle would allow for safer and faster travel, while also increasing productivity as passengers would have the option to work during their commute. As someone interested in entering the industry of venture capital, I see startups that focus on improving infrastructure around self driving cars to be worth funding. While the vehicles themselves will certainly be created by one of the major auto companies (Ford, Tesla, GM, etc), smaller aspects such as more efficient batteries or faster chargers could come from a small start-up in need of funds. Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차) and Waymo have agreed a multiyear partnership to bring fully autonomous tech to Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 SUV. Waymo, formerly known as the Google self-driving car project, focuses on self-driving technology, such as sensors, AI, and machine learning to analyze data and calculate safe routes for their autonomous vehicles. The autonomous EVs will be built at Hyundai’s new Georgia plant, with on-road testing set for late 2025. The IONIQ 5s will eventually join Waymo’s autonomous ride-hailing service, Waymo One.
