And that’s a wrap for LambEx Australia 2024! Great to catch up on all the latest tech, innovation, challenges and opportunities in the Lamb ag and processing space. An incredibly insightful, collaborative and fun show with a record number of attendees consuming a total of 1.1 metric tonnes of lamb in 2.5 days!! Jessica Schoonderwaldt and I talked all things eID, eNVD, AI, Scope 3, X-Ray and more and how Foods Connected Ltd can work with these emerging technologies to provide visibility, improvement and compliance into this brave new world. Top 3 highlights from the event: 🧬 Animal traceability is evolving, and it’s evolving FAST. The evolution of eID’s and AI has allowed trace exercises to go next level. Imagine a world where single animal traceability could track primals through the boning room and still retain linkage to the original ear tag off the live animal 🤯 👨🌾 Farming is the first line of defence in human nutrition. Anneline Padayachee [PhD] talked us through how important good farming is for overall human health, and then we spoke to countless people about how traceability will almost certainly include individual animal feeding metrics in the near future. Through eIDs and good data collection/storage this is 100% happening soon if not already in some spaces. 🤖 AI isn’t just for Skynet’s world domination and the introduction of terminators, it can be used for good too! Using AI to complete visual product checks including grading, sizing, counting and categorising everything from tiny seeds to whole animals is here now and it is impressive! The Grandslamb Gala Dinner was a sensational evening of laughs, Lambs and great conversations led by the brilliant poet and orator Rupert McCall. They also had Brad Blaze paint some sensational speed paintings including one of the Father of LambEx, Dawson Bradford. A fitting tribute to a great industry advocate! Lastly a huge thanks to Samuel Burke and the food team at Meat & Livestock Australia for keeping us extremely well fed for the week. The traditional Hāngī featuring whole lambs cooked overnight on Wednesday and served for breakky Thursday was a particular highlight for me! 🎙️MEQ founder and CEO Remo Carbone recently joined Joshua Becker on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Rural Report to discuss a new producer portal developed in partnership with Gundagai Lamb. 📚 The new platform gives producers unprecedented access to data, delving deeper into the yield and quality of their animal, powering analysis on a mob and individual animal level. 📊 Using data collected from MEQ probes, the dashboard enables producers to rank their mob against benchmarked averages, and assess how their animals rank against other producers. Remo emphasises that “data for the sake of it is of no value. People are time-poor. Our newest paper is out! 🐣 In this research, we developed a method that is suitable for deviation detection in laying hen egg production on commercial farms 🥚. The study, published in Computers and Electronics in Agriculture, emphasizes the added value of uniting farmer's knowledge 👩🌾 with state-of-the-art technology. 👩💻 The developed method allows adaptive, robust and tailor-made problem detection on laying hens farms in an early stage, facilitating daily decision making by the farm manager ánd safeguarding animal health and welfare. 💚 Many thanks to all co-authors Ali Youssef, Ph.D., Henry van den Brand, Anne van den Oever and Bas Kemp for the contribution, and to Vencomatic Group for their support in this research.
