Action-oriented business teams guided by a curious, hypothesis-driven data team backed by robust tracking and modeling infrastructure is a powerful recipe for operational excellence. In any organization, at any given time, one or more of these components may fall short: 1) Poor tracking hygiene or lax data modeling practices breed mistrust in the measurements and resultant analysis. 2) Superficial analysis and storytelling lead to reactive, noise-driven decision making. 3) Sluggish, risk-averse business teams severely limit learning and optimization However, when all elements come together, they create the optimal conditions for operational excellence to flourish. While seemingly straightforward, this reframes the question of data ROI question. It’s not merely about the quality of data, the number of dashboards and analyses, or how effectively business users leverage data to take action. Rather, it’s a seamless, continuous combination of all three factors, highlighting the shared responsibility and essential contributions of both data and business teams.

“Strategy”, a buzzword that is losing its meaning. I’m getting the sense that people cringe too often when they hear it, and it is a shame. Everyone is doing strategy now. Most of the time, it is confused with “vision”. Yes, visions are a part of strategies. However, while a vision tells us where we want to go, a strategy needs to tell us how we will get there. I hear “strategies” such as “We will get the most value from our data!” In the business world, this could be translated to “We want to make money!” or “We will reduce our costs!”. Really? They are not even useful objectives. One of the essential goals of any strategy is to provide clarity to the people in an organisation. By keeping it too broad and high-level, all you are doing is telling the world that you do not know where you are going or that you are not willing to sacrifice anything to get where you want to. And this is at the core of any strategy: your resources are limited, but your possibilities are endless. A courageous leadership will be able to make hard choices. You might not have money for both a Data Catalogue implementation and a Data Literacy programme. Strategy is about looking at your options, analysing them and picking a handful that you want to prioritise because they will lead you closer to your vision. Strategy is not just the “where” or “what”, it is also the “how”. Strategy takes you from A to B. Now, you might be wondering, how is strategy different from “change” or “transformation” ? We’ll leave that for another day! What do you think? Do you agree? #Data #Strategy #DataGovernance #DataArchitecture

Not all data teams are created equally. Every data leader knows this. But with data now viewed as a key organizational asset, high-performing data teams are becoming a key cornerstone of organizational success. These teams don't just crunch numbers – they drive innovation, ensure data integrity, and optimize ROI. I believe a top-tier data team needs three essential characteristics: ▪️ Leverages cutting-edge tech for data #efficiency and operations optimization ▪️ Adopts #observability best-practices to ensure a focus on high-impact data products that deliver tangible business value ▪️ Stays #agile by constantly monitoring data investment in the context of usage and business requirements Investing in your data team isn't just smart – it's essential for staying ahead in our rapidly evolving digital landscape. Is your organization truly leveraging data to make decisions? Are you confident that your goals are specific enough to drive actionable outcomes? If you're still relying on vague concepts and unclear objectives, you are DEFINITELY missing out on crucial insights that can propel your business forward. At the risk of stating the obvious, I'll say this 👇🏼 A lack of clear, measurable goals and actionable data will lead to inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and suboptimal decision-making. Here's the key: a data-driven mindset. Without it, identifying problems and crafting innovative solutions becomes an uphill battle. You can foster a data-driven mindset with these 5 steps: 1. Identify Trigger Words Pay attention to terms like "enough," "better," or "decrease." These words often indicate a need for precise data rather than abstract ideas. 2. Set Clear, Measurable Goals Instead of ambiguous objectives like "sell more," determine specific targets. Know your current numbers and aim for precise outcomes. 3. Find Data Points Every action generates data. Identify and track these data points to gain valuable insights into the effectiveness of your processes. 4. Use Data to Drive Conversations Analyze numbers at each step of your processes to facilitate productive discussions about necessary improvements. 5. Make Data Actionable Ensure data is not only available but also actionable. If you can't find the data you need, discuss it with your team or manager to ensure better data collection and usability. Transitioning from general goals to specific, measurable actions is essential for addressing challenges and finding innovative solutions. By adopting a data-driven mindset, you can enhance decision-making, optimize operations, and drive your organization towards success. Ready to dive deeper into becoming data-driven? Data isn’t just an operational byproduct; it’s a strategic asset. The right data, made available at the right time to the right people, enables better business decisions, drives efficiency, and creates competitive differentiation. A well-executed data governance framework may not yield immediate business impacts, but over time, it builds trust, transparency, and reliability—crucial for meeting both customer and stakeholder expectations. Yet, despite widespread awareness of data’s strategic importance, many organizations remain slow adopters of formal governance frameworks. The cost of delay? Poor strategic decisions, wasted resources, and underutilized data. The slow pace can be attributed to several factors—data governance often feels overwhelming, disruptive, and, frankly, prone to failure. When data governance initiatives fail, it’s rarely due to lack of need. More often, the culprits are lack of executive buy-in, poor alignment with business goals, or the all-too-common mistake of treating governance as an IT problem rather than a business imperative. In the era of overwhelming data, it's easy for business owners to get lost in the numbers. Understanding the metrics that matter most is a crucial part of steering your business towards success. To that end, have you noticed the recent changes in the ways we can now view stats? To enhance user experience and provide valuable insights, there's been a significant shift in the presentation of data metrics. One of the biggest changes is the ability to see stats from different angles, providing a more holistic view of performance. The focus is now on delivering the most relevant information in a format that is both accessible and actionable. The new stat view changes make it easier to see the big picture without getting lost in the weeds. By simplifying data and making it more intuitive, it's possible to quickly gauge how different aspects of your business are performing relative to each other.
