Compelling article from NY Times on caring for yourself as the caregiver. *PWC Take: The caregiving experience is unique, and often misunderstood & unsupported. People only realize its reality once they put on that cape themselves. Typical advice doesn't work and it puts unreasonable expectations on the already stretched-thin caregiver. Sometimes success truly is simply remembering to eat or have a glass of water. * "Caregiving can be fraught for the estimated 53 million Americans who assist family members and friends. And factors like financial strain and isolation can add to psychological distress. " “Somebody saying, ‘You need to take care of yourself’ suggests that person doesn’t actually know what it’s like to be a family caregiver. As a practical matter, there’s only so much you can do.” "Make sure you got enough sleep, make sure you’re eating, make sure you’re staying hydrated... It sounds simple, but these are the things that often get overlooked when you’re focused on someone else’s survival." "Without robust government support and resources, most U.S. caregivers have to figure things out on their own. And on top of overseeing another person’s health, housing and finances, she said, many caregivers have to navigate complex family dynamics when their siblings, spouses or parents become dependent on them." "But tallying up positives can help: A small study from 2017 found that dementia caregivers who were prompted to consider what they gained from their experience described things like finding purpose and new feelings of mastery." Thank you from Professionals Who Care to The New York Times, Louisa Kamps, William Haley, Anne Tumlinson, Rev. Nicholas Sollom, Allison J. Applebaum, Danny Goldman, and the caregivers who shared their intimate stories to contribute to this article. #CaregivingSupport #Caregivers #SelfCare #YouAreNotAlone #EmployedCaregivers https://lnkd.in/emA5f86G

5moSandwiched between five children and three aging parents, I am thankful for Daughterhood. My kids are not toddlers, they are teens and twentysomethings, which means more emotional support required at all levels. I rely on a regular exercise routine and lots of help from friends, family, and professionals to maintain my sanity.
