The 2024 KPMG CEO Outlook identifies a concerning trend: "In 2024, we’re seeing growing politicisation and polarisation of issues such as ... climate change, creating fresh challenges for CEOs already under pressure to perform." This trend reveals a clear divide in companies' ability to transition, depending on whether climate change is politicised within their jurisdiction. In regions where the issue has been depoliticised, businesses benefit from greater support, enabling a smoother transition. Conversely, where it remains politicised, transitions are often disorderly, increasing business risks. Tomorrow, we will publish an analysis of Japan’s climate-related disclosure regime, where the Japanese government has taken an “economic benefit” approach to disclosures. As global climate-related financial disclosure frameworks are implemented over the next few years, we anticipate significant shifts in capital flow, with investments increasingly favouring jurisdictions where transitions are more orderly. This highlights the need for responsible governance; governments should strive to depoliticise climate change and actively support businesses in their transition efforts to harness the economic advantages. https://lnkd.in/gyRbKiDq Melanie Baker-Jones Te Whakahaere Āhuarangi Ltd
