Who else noticed the powerful accessibility for Deaf and hard of hearing folks during the DNC? As someone deeply invested in making the world more deaf-friendly, I was thrilled to see both captions and ASL interpreters ensuring that the Deaf/hh community could fully engage. It’s also inspiring to see President Biden, a member of the disability community himself proving that inclusion isn't just possible, it's essential. Let's keep pushing for more of this in every space. This Deaf Awareness Week, let's turn up the volume on inclusivity! We recognise that #diversity isn't just about what we can see or hear. With 12 million people in the UK experiencing some form of deafness, it's crucial that our workplaces reflect and accommodate this diversity. Did you know that #BritishSignLanguage is an official language since 2003? Yet, many D/deaf individuals still face significant barriers in accessing services and information. It's not just about hearing—the D/deaf community has its own rich culture, history, and identity. Over nine per cent of Europe’s population is deaf or hard of hearing. With 153 million emergency calls made in the EU in 2022 alone, it is likely that some of this included deaf or hard-of-hearing people. It may surprise readers to know that, regardless of this, most public safety answering points still only accept voice calls. This election season, the votes of one million Deaf Americans are up for grabs. What do they need to participate? "To feel like citizens...we need not only access, but meaningful engagement across differences." https://lnkd.in/eNgARg9z Campaigns must, at a minimum, accurately caption their videos. But as noted by this article, real accessibility and inclusion go beyond that. Campaigns, especially larger campaigns at the state & national level, should have ASL interpreters at events. And true inclusion means more than accessibility.
