Reflecting on my final day at #Ozwater, one session truly stood out: the 'Purified Recycled Water Treatment Validation, The Next Step in Building Community and Regulator Confidence' Panel. @Suzanne Sharkey of the National Water Research Institute (NWRI) presented on their work in the US, and it got me thinking - wouldn't it be brilliant to have a similar institution in Australia? (There may be one- please let me know if there is)
Imagine an independent organisation that provides quality
assurance and quality control support for challenging water projects. One that acts as a bridge between academia, utilities, and the community. In a Victorian context, such an institution could be a game-changer in building trust and confidence in the water sector.
Take, for example, the recent release of the EPA's 'Recycled
Water Use in Surface Water Guidelines' (Publication 3005 | February 2024).
While these guidelines aim to facilitate treated wastewater discharges into the environment for 'environmental benefit,' concerns have been raised within the community. Some feel that the focus on microbial standards neglects emergent contaminants and lacks substantive evidence.
Now, don't get me wrong, the EPA undoubtedly has a great team of
scientists behind their reports. However, the absence of an independent voice in these matters raises questions, particularly when significant decisions regarding water use are at stake. Political power dynamics have the potential overshadow scientific rigour, making it essential to have an unbiased entity dedicated solely to ensuring water safety.
Yes, establishing an Australian NWRI would be a significant
undertaking. But imagine the benefits it could bring; increased confidence in
utilising diversified water sources for environmental purposes, enhanced stakeholder trust and collaboration, and ultimately, safer water management practices.
In the meantime, the community needs to increase their #water literacy so they can contribute to environmental decision-making. A few water-focused events are coming up:
