The current global economy is like a giant pressure cooker for people who are trying to build and maintain trusted commercial relationships.
Compounding this is the fact that the year 2024 will see an unprecedented number of people around the world heading to the polls: 64 political elections, including the USA, India and EU. 49% of the world's population. Source: Time.
Maintaining and building trust in this environment is something that will test all of us, especially in the context of a negotiation.
This week, our Founder and CEO, Sarah Blackie, delivered an online webinar with Stu van Rij at the World Commerce & Contracting Negotiation Week.
The topic?
How to overcome trust blind spots during negotiation.
Take a look at our tips in this post. And if building trust in your commercial relationships is something you are challenged by, we'd love to hear from you.
CEO & Founder, Esby & Co. World-leading partnerships and procurement experiences.
Building trust during a high-stakes commercial negotiation can be hard. But there are so many things we can do to nurture trust and set ourselves up for an enduring relationship.
Do you agree?
Yesterday this great guy, Stu van Rij and I shared our wisdom from our years of success and scars. We presented at the World Commerce & Contracting Negotiation Week virtual event to help others level up in negotiation.
What I love about negotiation is that it is a creative process. What can be hard is trying to deeply understanding multiple interests and the time constraints.
Here is a snapshot of things to consider as you embark on your negotiation.
What would you add?
✳ Trust requires taking 'micro-risks': say or do something that is a little vulnerable. Observe how or whether the other person reciprocates. Remember that taking steps to build trust is a choice.
🙋♀️A trusted relationship encourages candour between the parties. At Esby & Co, we show this by having real conversations and challenging our clients and their partners in a respectful way. Check out the book Radical Candour by Kim Scott.
🎂 If you really want a trusted relationship, you need to demonstrate care for the other party. Care for their people. Its not always about buying them cake but that can definitely help 😉 Sometimes its a matter of checking in with 'how are you?' and 'what's happening in your world right now?'
Thanks for having us World CC!

Here are three tips to get you started with contract negotiations:
📝 Prep and Leverage: Define your goals, research your counterpart, and have a strong BATNA (Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement).
👂🏼 Active Listening and Collaborative Focus: Pay close attention and prioritize solutions that satisfy both parties' needs.
👨🏻💻 Strategic Concessions and Professionalism: Make calculated trades, and maintain a respectful demeanor throughout.
