It was a pleasure to present a paper on “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of RFMO/As: Some Reflections After 30 Years of the LOSC Entering into Force” at the 'The Presence of International Organizations in the Evolution of the International Law of the Sea: Thirty Years since the Entry into Force of #UNCLOS', at the University of A Coruña. Other presenters on the panel dealing with "Regional International Organizations and Institutionalized Cooperation Mechanisms" were Arron N. Honniball, Viljam Engström, Géraldine Giraudeau, and Andrea Caligiuri. The panel was aptly chaired by Laura Carballo Piñeiro. Many thanks to Gabriela Oanta for the invitation and for making the conference such a highly enjoyable experience! And also thanks to the other local organisers for the smooth organisation of the conference and the great hospitality (Christoph R. Schreinmoser, Andrea T., and Artak Mkrtichyan). It was also great fun to reconnect with Richard Collins, Mitchell Lennan, Ilias Plakokefalos, Mercedes Rosello, and Jessica Schechinger (to name just a few)! #fisheries #fisheriesmanagement #internationallaw #lawofthesea

☝ Through IICA and AGRA, Latin America and the Caribbean and Africa strengthen cooperation to promote agricultural sustainability in two regions that are key to food security and conservation 👉The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) have underscored their decision to work together to enhance the role of Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean as territories that are key to guaranteeing the planet’s food security and environmental sustainability 🌿 🤝 AGNES KALIBATA President of AGRA, and Manuel Otero, Director General of IICA, took part in an online discussion with Jack A Bobo, Director of the Food Systems Institute at the University of Nottingham, in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 🗨In the dialogue all three agreed that the two continents need to deepen their reciprocal collaboration ☝ And that agriculture should be viewed as part of the solution to the challenges facing humanity; and not only for tackling the problem of food security, but also for the energy transition that is underway. Happy and proud to have been able to contribute to the Green European Horizons Academy's conference: "How Can it be Good for All?" Albeit short, for me that was an amazing experience, which really allowed me to link my academic studies with pressing contemporary issues. I am optimistically looking forward to more and more opportunities like this one. The conference itself focused predominantly on the problems of extractivism and its future in a world that is determined to undergo a just green transition. I was able to draw on my recent research on neo-extractivism in Bolivia to show that even contemporary re-evaluations of extractivism are guilty of the same problems as their "original sin". Namely, they sustain intra- and international systems of oppression and inequality, contribute to the marginalisation of indigenous communities and empower authocratic regimes of surplus capture, resource distribution and environmental degradation. As discussed in the conference, it is thus of crucial importance to critically examine extractivism in order to pave the way towards a just, ecologically tolerant (and probably post-extractivist) future. I highly recommend visitting the website of the conference and diving a bit deeper in the topic at Polekol - Kako da bude "Dobro za sve?" (it has versions both in Serbian and English). These are important questions for environmental and non-environmental professionals alike. As for those who want to see the contribution of yours truly, check out the following video (https://lnkd.in/dgxyCYjy) between 8:58 - 10:19 and stay for my wonderful colleagues at University of Sussex. #environment #environmentalprotection #environmentaljustice #extraction #extractiveindsutries #extractivism #neoextractivism #justtransition #ecology #conference #environmentalconsulting
