Each year, travel company Rick Steves' Europe pays a self-imposed carbon tax of $30 per tour member to creatively mitigate the carbon produced by their travelers' round-trip flights between the US and Europe. They then invest that money into a portfolio of non-profit organizations like Global Communities that focus on climate-smart agriculture, conservation, and agroforestry projects in developing countries. We are proud to be using a generous grant from Rick Steves’ Europe’s Climate Smart Commitment to provide training and technical support to women farmers in the Mara region of Tanzania as they lead the transition to more productive, climate smart agriculture, strengthening livelihoods and food security in their families and communities, and building resilience to climate change. Through this assistance, women are introduced to improved production techniques, higher yielding seed varieties and climate-smart agricultural practices. The task of feeding the world falls largely on smallholder and household farmers, most of whom are women, all of whom are on the frontlines of the #climate crisis. We’re proud to partner with Rick Steves’ Europe to ensure the women in our program have the knowledge, skills and resources they need to meet this challenge. #WorldEnvironmentDay

My article on #womenleadership in sustainable land management in Farmers Review Africa is up! 🌿 In Kenya 🇰🇪, land is a cultural heritage, and women are leading the change in sustainable land management and #conservation. Their leadership and indigenous knowledge are crucial for preserving the ecosystems for future generations. Intellecap’s accelerator program also supported #climatesmart agricultural enterprises in the country, promoting #gendermainstreaming and empowering women in the sector. 💪🏽 Huge thanks to Teresa Muthoni from One Tree Planted who highlighted the growing recognition of women's critical role in land restoration. At the core of the issue, *gender-responsive policies* are essential. These policies should ensure #equalrights to land ownership and access to financial resources, credit, and decision-making bodies. By investing in women’s empowerment, Kenya (and other countries!) can drive positive change for communities and the environment. 💚 Let me know what you think! 💃🏼 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dUnu52eK . #Sustainability #WomenInConservation #LandRestoration #ClimateAction #GenderEquality #Kenya #Agriculture #EnvironmentalLeadership

Spotlight on our farmers The women behind AWIA (African Women in Agriculture) - Johannesburg South Africa - Why have they partnered with EcoForce Global? “Our projects focuses on empowering vulnerable women farmers (the most marginalised), to foster creation of green- entrepreneurship based income sources. Our choice in trees was influenced by the multiple benefits of providing food and restoring the environment while being cognisant of the area within which we operate. We have selected fruit trees for our project; peach trees which will thrive in our farm environment and provide nutritious fruit to our beneficiaries. The fruit trees will also stabilise the soil, minimise erosion, and provide valuable nutrients to the community. The farm is surrounded by low income communities for whom access to affordable food is a challenge. We will have the capacity to provide them with easy access to fruit at their doorstep, while we conserve the environment. Tree planting is hugely beneficial to the environment as it reduces erosion, improves air quality, provides shade, improves the soil, improves air quality, and attracts insects /bees for pollination. Our land is currently barren and in need of trees (see the picture). This project is our contribution to addressing the challenge of climate change as well as a pilot which will allow us to scale this program to other parts of the country through our network of women farmers.” 🌳 These goals can’t be achieved without your support! 🌊 Fun Fact: Did you know that while water covers about 71% of the Earth's surface, less than 1% of it is fresh and accessible for human use? That tiny fraction sustains billions of people, ecosystems, and economies worldwide! This highlights just how critical water conservation and ocean health are to the future of our planet. At SOA Ethiopia, we’re empowering young people to be changemakers in solving some of the biggest challenges facing our oceans and freshwater systems whether it’s through advocacy, innovation or community action. 💡 Did you know? If every person took just one small action like reducing plastic use, conserving water, or advocating for clean waterways the ripple effect would be extraordinary. 🌊 Join us in creating waves of change! Follow SOA Ethiopia to be part of a youth-led movement that’s reimagining sustainability and tackling real-world challenges. Together, we can protect the lifeblood of our planet and secure a brighter, more sustainable future. Sustainable Ocean Alliance SOA TANZANIA Sisay Lucas Netsanet M. Great take aways last week from the Accelerating Nature based Solutions #Zambia which was attended by delegates from 54 countries. 🌐 There are great opportunities to undertake sustainable land management models through strengthening livelihoods and l increased incomes for farmer households and communities in the affected ecosystemsbacross Africa. This is an opportune incentive for adoption of restoration and regreening efforts by millions of smallholders. 🌐 Significant restoration can be delivered through business cases and enterprise development models. Many farms and ranches are ready to onboard restoration and regreening approaches that contribute to their revenue and business growth. Carbon payments for example can be great incentives for increasing tree growing and permanence. 🌐Intergenerational sustainable land management is a great but overlooked restoration window. Carbon projects are now running for as long as fifty years. How many of the current players in restoration will be alive by 2074? The youth must be onboarded via increased economic opportunities like jobs, enterprise development and technology. Better still, children should be educated and exposed to regreening practices like agroforestry within the schools and their communities. 🌐Lastly, climate change and degraded lands are posing challenges that are bigger than individual countries and regions. Therefore, individual programs and institutions are too small to address this impending threat to future of humanity. Connections, linkages and collaborations must be made for a greener planet. This demands public, private and development sectors to work together. At SNV we will be actively making follow-ups to connections we made during the conference for further exploration. Transforming Africa’s food systems requires inclusive stakeholder engagement and science-based decision-making. The voices of local communities, Indigenous Peoples, women, and youth must be central to these processes, supported by robust data and scientific approaches. This ensures that policies and practices are equitable, effective, and capable of driving systemic change. - Michael Misiko 🔗 Discover how The Nature Conservancy in Africa is transforming Africa's food systems through regenerative agriculture practices: nature.org/africa #AFSForum2024 #InnovateAccelerateScale AFS Forum

🌱 Co m p o s t M a n u r e 🌱 Increasing food security and income Project experiences.Know-how. At a glance. Topic: Sustainable Livelihoods Soil infertility and lack of knowledge on good agronomic practices to improve soil fertility caused food shortages in Bwira Village. Even though the small scale farmers in the community spent most of their time in their fields, the yields remained very low. Moreover, women in the community were excluded from financial decisions at household level due to the fact that they did not generate any income. The solution was to produce and apply environment-friendly compost manure, to achieve food security and to generate income. 💬What was the experience?
