Integrating AI into scientific research requires a careful approach to address risks like bias and privacy concerns, but the potential benefits are enormous. Large Language Models (LLMs) present a unique chance to foster a culture of experimentation in businesses and policymaking at scale. This shift enables systematic, data-driven decisions over intuition, boosting productivity. In policymaking, LLMs can pilot policy options through low-cost randomized trials, promoting an iterative, evidence-based approach. If we manage these risks wisely, generative AI becomes an invaluable tool for more prolific, transparent, and data-driven experimentation, all while preserving the crucial role of human creativity and discretion.

And now … the last – but not the least - PhD defence in our recent series of 4. We look forward to hearing Lluís Sala presenting his project “From Mediation to Transformation: The Role of Innovation Intermediaries in the AI and Digital Era”. Innovation processes today depend on human intellect and the exchange of knowledge and ideas. With the advent of artificial intelligence and other data science technologies, there is great potential to enhance the effectiveness of these processes, leading to the creation of more and better innovative solutions and products for industry and society. Lluís’ PhD thesis explores how this transformation can be facilitated by innovation intermediaries and examines how these organizations can implement AI-driven innovation within an industry traditionally centered on human involvement. His research has the potential to aid shape the way innovation intermediaries and policymakers approach digital transformation and AI integration. By providing theoretical insights and practical strategies, this research equips intermediaries with the knowledge and tools needed to adapt to the rapidly evolving digital landscape. Buehler has developed a revolutionary method for discovering new ideas, concepts, and designs. This approach has the potential to accelerate scientific discovery and push the boundaries of what is possible. The advantages of this AI model include its ability to systematically reason over complex scientific concepts and behaviors, and its use of category theory to unify diverse systems. It has already been successfully applied to analyze scientific papers and suggest new designs for materials, such as a mycelium-based composite material inspired by Wassily Kandinsky's Composition VII. However, challenges still remain, such as ensuring the ethical use of AI in research and development.
