Every employee I know works every day to get from point A to point B. Sometimes they follow straight lines. Sometimes they zig zag. Sometimes there’s a chasm to cross. Just about every time there’s an obstacle to confront. As leaders, our job is to create the conditions so our employees can arrive safely, wherever it is that they’re headed and ensure they feel confident in meeting unexpected challenges. It’s no small task. It turns out that the connections employees have at work - to the mission of the organization, to their manager and to their peers - are one of the most effective ways to manage that gap. The key question is whether you’re making it easy for your employees to access the people, resources and peer-validated skills they need so they can be productive and positive from anywhere? On October 9 I’m excited to return to Los Angeles for From Day One’s conference on culture where I’ll explore the answer to this big question with Dr. Eryn Mack Legette, Chief People Officer for TruAmerica Multifamily. Dr. Mack and I are excited to share the dais with Brie Schraeder-Harvey (She/Her), Advisor with Achievers Workforce Institute. Brie will guide a riveting workshop entitled “Motivating Beyond Money: Investing in “Emotional Salary” to Engage and Retain”. Also on stage are Ross Pollack of Lionsgate, Dr. Peter H. Kim of University of Southern California, Kim Beauvais of FOX Sports, Antonio Hairston of WME | William Morris Endeavor, Faith E. Pinho of Los Angeles Times, Samantha Khoury (Stewart) of Los Angeles Lakers, Bernie C. Knobbe, CEBS, CCP of AECOM, Chandler Bondan of BuzzFeed, Sarah Jingco of Securitas Group, Laura Bartus, SHRM-SCP of Humana, Pamela Avila of USA TODAY, Alison Brower of The Ankler, Christine White of Alstom and Nick Wolny of OUT MAGAZINE. Your company’s core values are your guiding star: the beliefs and principles that shape who you are, what you do, and why you do it. The best workplaces lead with shared values rather than rules and policies. That’s because when rules are the guiding force, rather than an organization’s values, trust isn’t at the core of the employer-employee relationship. Shared values can engage and empower, which in turn boosts innovation, creativity, and productivity. Our Core Values here at Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA are simple, effective and in support of our overall mission to "Show up for everyone like they're the only one." Those values are: 1. Be Kind 2. Be the Example 3. Be Curious 4. Be Community Focused 5. Be Courageous Are you someone that aligns with these values? Of all the commentary we will see about #juneteenth today, the most important statements will take the form of action — including by employers who continue to work to close persistent disparities in employment and opportunity. At TalentFirst, we recognize that West Michigan can only succeed if everyone can thrive here. This recognition is the basis for our DE&I Toolkit, our DE&I Benchmark Survey, and our CEO Commitment. Our region still has work to do. But these strategic, practical actions provide a means to celebrate the freedom that Juneteenth represents, and to help make it meaningful for future generations. https://lnkd.in/ecqKaD_j

For me there’s no greater professional thrill than the chance to learn and grow with colleagues. Yesterday I had the chance to speak at the University of Minnesota at From Day One’s conference on building a culture for workers and companies to thrive in times of change. Here are some of my key take-aways from the day: Everyone wants the chance to stay and grow their career and they’ll pick your company if they feel seen and valued. 40% of employees want their career growth to come in a completely different career. Employees are retaining only about 10% of the things they learn through our investment in learning and development programs. We need to move away from a “buffet style” of employee experience programs where we simply present the things on offer to our people, to an approach that’s more personal and meets folks in the moments that matter to them. A common thread is that the era of one-sized-fits-all people programs in ever and can be replaced by an era of hyper-personalization that puts people first - as long as we have the data to demonstrate the impact. My own presentation focused on four conditions - Connection, Celebration, Compensation and Choice - that help organizations recruit the employees they already have. The mission of the University of Minnesota is to generate, share and apply knowledge and so for me, yesterday ticked each box. PS - DM me if you’d like my slides from the day.
