Perry N Halkitis, Dean & Hunterdon Professor, Rutgers School of Public Health, and ASPPH’s current board chair, engaged in a discussion with Mongoose's For Your Institution (FYI) host Gil Rogers regarding the trajectory of public health. Dr. Halkitis also discussed his role as board chair of ASPPH, explaining ASPPH’s mission and highlighting the importance of ASPPH in addressing current public health challenges, and ensuring that educational programs remain relevant and responsive to societal needs. Dr. Halkitis delved into the importance of equipping public health professionals with technological proficiency and enhancing their interpersonal competencies. The conversation also dove into the challenges faced by public health workers amidst the COVID-19 crisis and the possibility of even greater hurdles in potential future pandemics. Lastly, Dr. Halkitis underscored the need for reform within public health education, the integration of activism, bolstering communication proficiencies, and a reevaluation of higher education curricula to better correspond with workforce demands. Great lecture at Warwick Medical School on the science of lay responder CPR. My takeaways: 👉 80% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in the home - you are much more likely to be applying your CPR skills to a family member or friend than to a stranger. 👉 Bystanders performing CPR requires a lot more than training in the techniques - cultural norms, feelings of self-efficacy, and the ability to recognise cardiac arrest all come into play. 👉 Aftercare for bystanders who have delivered CPR is important, feelings of "what just happened?" are normal even for those with training.
👉Today we were delighted to welcome Professor Katie Dainty to deliver a Dean's Distinguished Lecture on 'When You Need to Think Differently about Your Science: The Example of Lay Responder CPR Rates' 👉Using her qualitative work on bystander CPR and out of hospital cardiac arrest as an example, Katie discussed the importance of thinking differently to solve complex problems in health care. 👉Professor Dainty is a qualitative social scientist and Research Chair in Patient-Centred Outcomes at North York General Hospital. In addition to her appointment at NYGH, she is an Associate Professor and Director of the Health Systems Research Graduate Training Program in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME) at the University of Toronto. 👉She has expertise in the areas of patient and family experience, implementation science, patient-centred outcome measures, and quality improvement in health care. Her core program of research focuses on using qualitative and co-design methods to unpack long-held assumptions about bystander experience and survivorship following sudden cardiac arrest. We continue to reflect on the Gaylord Anderson Memorial Lecture that Sandro Galea, dean of the Boston University School of Public Health, recently gave at our school. As with all his writing and speaking, Dean Galea engaged us with his intelligence, humor, and rigorous adherence to facts as he reviewed the state of health in the U.S. and our field's response to COVID-19. Although we did a lot of things right during the pandemic, Dean Galea also talked about how we faltered. He offered a better way forward and suggested that as public health professionals, we need: 1. Epistemic humility (to be humble about what we know and don't know) 2. Radical compassion (to understand far better the real burdens people face) 3. Reform through reason (to act boldly to reform the system, but be pragmatic and bring people along, no matter their politics)
