Clifford Chance have just matched Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's and Linklaters' GBP£150,000 for NQ lawyers. Paul Hodkinson of Law.com International asks "Is there a maximum number in this salary race?": "The gap between the leading U.S. firms and everyone else has been growing for some time. When law firm leaders talk about the emergence of a global elite—a breakaway group of the top international law firms—they almost always include themselves in the group, regardless of who they are. They talk about the quality of their lawyers and their geographical reach. But it seems to me that the law firms paying the highest junior lawyer salaries would be the most logical group to consider as global elite contenders given they can already afford to pay so much and they will no doubt be attracting the best young lawyers. ... It is apt then that the salary differentials between firms are widening, suggesting some will struggle to keep up. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer wants to be on a higher level than its U.K. peers so upped its rates to a quasi-mid-Atlantic rate. Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan didn’t like being on the same level as Freshfields so bumped its own salaries to Cravath levels. When the time comes for the likes of Milbank to announce their own rates towards the end of the year, you can be sure they will try to out-do their rivals. And then we will no doubt see the likes of Cravath and Davis Polk & Wardwell announce an even higher level, which everyone rushes to match. #SalaryWars #BigLaw #JamesonLegal https://lnkd.in/eqrj9_2X

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has reportedly boosted the annual salaries for its newly qualified lawyers to a whopping US$190,000 (roughly equivalent to £150,000). 🤯 Assuming these lawyers are expected to bill around 1,600 hours annually (it's likely to be much more), let's use some basic law firm math to conservatively determine a target hourly rate: Target R.O.I per NQ lawyer: $190,000 x 3 = $570,000 per year Hourly rate: $570,000 / 1,600 hours = $356 per hour In contrast, at Support Legal, a senior lawyer with over 10 years of experience recruited from the same or a similar firm can be engaged for as low as $400 per hour. Just saying... 😊 #legalconsultancy #lawfirms #DIFC #ADGM #UAE #salarywars #customerpays

Biglaw Signing Bonuses May Be Back In Action Come 2025. After a brief pause due to economic uncertainty and shifting market conditions, the competitive world of Biglaw is poised to bring back signing bonuses in 2025. These bonuses, once a common perk in the legal industry, were temporarily put on hold by many firms as they navigated through challenges like inflation, hiring freezes, and economic slowdowns. However, signs of recovery and renewed demand for top talent indicate that the practice could make a strong comeback. Signing bonuses have long been a way for large law firms to attract and secure the best legal minds, particularly in a highly competitive environment. These bonuses typically offer new associates a substantial financial incentive to join a firm, often ranging from tens of thousands to over $100,000, depending on the firm’s size and prestige. In recent months, several prominent firms have begun to reintroduce these bonuses, signaling a shift in the legal landscape. Experts attribute this trend to a combination of factors: increased corporate activity, a growing need for skilled lawyers, and the desire to outpace competitors in the talent war. As 2025 approaches, law students and lateral candidates can expect firms to offer attractive compensation packages, with signing bonuses likely to be a central part of the deal. This renewal of bonuses not only underscores the vitality of Biglaw but also serves as a reminder of how the industry continually adapts to meet both economic and talent market demands. #Biglaw #Bonuses #2025trends #Talentwar #Compensation

A Friday thought. So much is written about salaries at law firms and especially the recent coverage of the 'ton eighty' (to coin the maximum darts phrase) for NQs at some firms. The coverage only ever seems to apply to fee-earner salaries. With so many alternative careers within law firms now and our desire to attract a more diverse demographic into the profession, why is it always only about the lawyers? Law firms are so much more than lawyers. Something by the way that clients really value. #oshaped #peoplefirst #bemoreO

📢 Facing employment disputes? should you Settle outside of court or go to Tribunal? 🤔 Both options have their pros and cons, and understanding them can help you make the right choice. Let’s break it down! 🚀 Benefits of settling: - Control & flexibility: You call the shots, including negotiating perks like a glowing reference. - Speed and ease: No need to wait months and go through the court process of forms, bundles and hearings—settlements can happen in weeks. - Cost-effective: Save on legal fees and avoid the risk of covering the other side’s costs. - Confidentiality: Settlements stay private; tribunals go public. - Less stress: Skip the emotional toll of a long tribunal. ⚠️ Drawbacks of settling: - Lower Compensation: You may get less than a tribunal might award. - Pressure to Settle: Financial stress can push you to accept less if you do not have the right type of advice ⚖ Benefits of going to Tribunal: - Higher Awards: Tribunals often result in more compensation, especially for discrimination or wrongful dismissal cases. - Fair judgment: An impartial panel will hear your case. - Publicly challenge unlawful practices! - Legal precedent: Your win could benefit others down the line. ⏳ Drawbacks of a Tribunal: - Time-Consuming: It can take months (or longer) to reach a decision. - Uncertainty: No guarantees on the outcome. - Public record: Tribunal cases are public, which can affect your privacy. - Stressful process: It’s a formal, emotional process—especially if you go it alone. 💡 Not sure which path is right for you? Let us help you decide! Truth be told, settlement is often the best option. While it may seem like you could get less than in court, expert negotiators know how to get you the best possible deal.
