Wedding season is around the corner. In India, on an average 1 million weddings are organized every year. So let’s calculate the carbon footprint of a wedding.  According to a survey, an average three-day Indian wedding of around 500-800 guests produces about 700–800 kilos of wet waste and 1,500 kilos of dry waste. Around 20-30% of the food prepared for the wedding goes into waste. And that’s a lot! Have you ever heard about the "Zero Waste Wedding"?  Concept of zero waste weddings can save a lot of waste from going into landfills. Three years ago, in my sister’s wedding I and my family were planning for the wedding arrangements. The easiest and the convenient options was to choose the single use plates for serving food during the pre wedding events. Upon my insistence, my family agreed to use the reusable steel plates instead of single use ones. This not only reduced waste but also generated employment as we kept a helper for cleaning the plates. So, if we follow this approach it will not only help our environment but also help people earn a little more than their regular income. Now here comes a twist, people often ask what about hygiene? They say that they use single-use cutlery because of hygiene. As per my opinion, this can be still managed by ensuring that the cutlery is being washed properly. Using single use cutlery for our hygiene but at what cost, making our environment suffer. Is it acceptable? Our small steps can make a huge positive impact collectively for our mother Earth. So, next time you have a wedding or any event at your home, try to go for a zero waste event. We also have many event planning startups who help us in organizing zero waste events.
