300 slices of pizza later… Customer Experience is a funny game, we are somehow always trying to do more with less. As Black Friday creeps in around the corner, I think back to the all too familiar planning meetings I used to have. We’d start with looking at the sales and order plan, and then use that to build our headcount plan for the call centre. We were always trying to balance our budget with the inevitable need of bringing in enough people (preferably with enough experience). The challenge ahead was to try and double the workforce for Black Friday. But how do we bring them in close enough to the event so as not to carry costs with not much work to do, but long enough before that the new starters could build up some experience? We knew we wanted to still provide an amazing experience without compromising just because of Black Friday. The answer often lies in compromise, a duel between budget vs ambition. Sometimes we made it through mostly unscathed and at other times we were left licking our wounds. Email backlogs in the thousands and a very tired team after hours of overtime and far too much pizza (if you know then you know then you know 🙂). Has anyone ever looked for duplicate emails in the queue to close them down? How about trying to route password reset requests to the new starters? Cancelling 121s & coaching sessions, reducing the training time for temp staff in the hopes they could only deal with the ‘easiest queries’? Is there such a thing as easy queries? It doesn’t have to be this way. We have enough use cases out there now to get started with AI, without having to do big old grand transformations. You’ve likely heard all of the work smarter, not harder stuff. Just know that you can have a great Black Friday and not compromise nearly as much as you might think or did last year. Welcome back to the first day of the last month of the year, yippee. One more year, almost in the books, no distractions ahead, right? I hope you had your fill of turkey, football, and cheer. Were you able to take advantage of those Black Friday deals? Get that tree set up, start checking names off your “to buy” list? I know the month of December can be a bit stressful without having to deal with work, or some cranky coworkers and bosses. For my company, we’re kissing 2024 goodbye on December 20th. We’ll mail in the rest of the year, so it will be a very busy 3 weeks for me and my crew. I know some of you have been working hard since the beginning of Q4, because you are in the midst of doing renewals, I hope you’re getting some rest in between the long, long days. This time of year, when we’re all out of balance, it calls for a bit of deep breathing, and some self-reflection. First, and foremost, we’re all going to live. If you didn’t hit your goals, or think you’ll have to put them off until 2025, you are forgiven. Having goals helps you focus on what you want, and sometimes through your control or not, they don’t always come together. As long as you put in the good fight, show up every day, and try, that is all you can ask of yourself. It takes character to show up every day and keep a good attitude so you can be effective. It seems when things go well at work, the rest of your life cascades in contentment and happiness: not always, but a lot of the time. If you are in between the peaks of your career and seemingly working hard but not seeing results, you will. The universe has a way of putting things right, and as John Lennon once said, “Everything will be okay in the end, if it’s not okay, it’s not the end”. That is a good mantra when you are struggling, just keep the faith and finish strong. Control the controllables, don’t get distracted by the holiday cheer, family commitments and other obligations, they will be waiting for you no matter what, so just give less shits. 2025 will show whether we’re ready or not, and for some of us, we want to wish 2024, good riddance, no matter where you are in your life, if you’re behind on your goals, were overlooked for a promotion, or just feel adrift at sea, now is the time to reflect. Some of you may be considering a job change, you feel you’ve given your employer enough time to follow through on promises, promotions, and maybe a real salary increase, not a cost-of-living adjustment, that is OK. I am happy to try to help you determine if your fear is a pattern, or just maybe a pause and you should stay the course. I've been chatting with some of my clients, leads, and other business contacts, and the energy is palpable. It's almost as if we're all rushing to grab that last-minute Black Friday sale before signing off for the year. But here's the thing - it happens every year. No matter how much we refine our planning or communication, this time always seems to come with a frenzy. Deadlines feel tighter, the to-do lists grow longer and everyone's juggling work with personal commitments. I get it - this time of year can feel overwhelming. But in the mad dash to wrap things up, I urge everyone to pause and consider the bigger picture. The pressure to "get it all done" can sometimes lead to shortcuts, oversights, and decisions that may come back to bite us. We cannot afford to compromise on health and safety in the rush to meet deadlines. The risks simply aren't worth it. So, as you navigate these next few weeks, I encourage you to stay focused, stay vigilant, and stay safe.
