In our society, disabilities often come with visible signs, like wheelchairs or canes. However, not all disabilities are visible. This image beautifully captures the reality that some disabilities look like this (showing symbols for various disabilities) and some look like this (showing a person with no visible aids). As someone who has Muscular Dystrophy (MD), I understand firsthand the challenges of living with an "invisible" disability. While I may appear "normal" and able to walk, the reality is far more complex. Muscular Dystrophy is a group of genetic disorders that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. For many of us, it means: Struggling to climb stairs or run. Finding it difficult to stand up without assistance if sitting on the ground. Facing severe fatigue from activities that others might find simple. These limitations can be misunderstood or overlooked because they aren't immediately visible. It’s crucial to remember that just because a disability isn't apparent, doesn't mean it isn't there. To all the warriors living with Muscular Dystrophy and other invisible disabilities, your strength and resilience are incredible. Let's continue raising awareness and fostering an inclusive world where everyone’s abilities are recognized and respected. #InvisibleDisabilities #Muscularydstrophy #Inclusion #Awareness #DisabilityRights
Inclusion starts with accessibility. We celebrate the Global Accessibility Awareness Day by promoting the importance of accessibility for everyone both online and offline, regardless of their disability. Recently, the European Parliament gave a final green light to the EU Disability Card and the European Parking Card for people with disabilities. This is a huge step towards removing obstacles and ensuring that citizens with disabilities can enjoy freedom of movement. Both cards will be issued in physical and online formats and the access to information will be guaranteed by a fully accessible website in all EU languages and formats. Your voices were heard, see more 👉 europa.eu/!fpPdtk #EUDisabilityCard #EUParkingCard

Those of you who know me and/or have worked beside me know that I’ve spent most of my career on understanding accessibility - particularly from the social model lens. It’s so important to set up environments from the very beginning (proactively) to address as many needs as possible - this approach saves both time and money - and creates an environment where everyone has the opportunity to not only have access - but to also succeed. In my current position at #MotorolaSolutions, I have the privilege of working beside Kimberly Hornstein and Mike Linning - co-presidents of our People with Disabilities + Allies business council (employee resource group). So excited to be on this journey of creating accessible environments with them! Here are just a few strategies to implement as universal designs in the workplace: Accessible Documents: Ensure that all documents shared in meetings and collaborations are accessible, including PDFs with proper headings, alt text for images and accessible tables. Flexible Scheduling: Offer flexible scheduling options for meetings and events to accommodate individuals with diverse time zones, caregiving responsibilities or other accessibility needs. Audio Descriptions: Provide audio descriptions for visual content, such as presentations or videos, to make them accessible to individuals with visual impairments. Captioning Tools: Use captioning tools and plugins in virtual platforms to automatically generate captions for live discussions and presentations. Feedback Mechanisms: Implement feedback mechanisms to gather input from about the accessibility of platforms and content, and take action to address any identified barriers. 🎉🎉🎉
Dedicated financial and process oriented professional, People with Disabilities advocate, Inclusion supporter.
Happy Global Accessibility Awareness Day! Remember accessibility in all that you do. Not everyone can see you, hear you or have physical access. Some may need an accommodation to participate. Proud that #Motorolasolutions promotes our Business Councils including The People with Disabilities + Allies Council.
