My vlog on ‘Community policing’ (CP) a vital approach to democratize policing, fostering a collaborative relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve. By engaging with citizens, listening to their concerns, and addressing their needs, police can build trust, legitimacy, and support. This leads to more effective law enforcement, as communities become active partners in preventing and solving crimes. CP encompasses various strategies, including: 1. Community engagement and outreach 2. Neighborhood policing and patrols 3. Problem-oriented policing 4. Partnerships with local organizations and stakeholders 5. Transparency and accountability By adopting CP principles, law enforcement agencies can: 1. Enhance public trust and confidence 2. Improve communication and cooperation 3. Reduce crime and fear of crime 4. Promote inclusive and equitable policing practices 5. Strengthen community cohesion and social bonds

#TheRoleofCommunityinCrimePrevention Community policing, like Kisii’s Zungu Zungu initiative, shows the potential of local partnerships in enhancing safety. However, such programs can fail if misunderstood, sometimes becoming tools of intimidation rather than safety. To succeed, they need community trust, transparency, and regular sensitization. With proper training and accountability, these programs can transform into true safety partnerships. How can we ensure community policing achieves its intended purpose?

QUESTION - How do you think this issue should be dealt with? The UK but mainly London has been grappling with a serious knife crime issue, and the situation is more alarming than ever. The attached photo vividly illustrates the extent of the problem—people are carrying large knives to public events (Notting Hill Carnival) with the sole intention to injure or kill someone. This is not just a reflection of our city's growing crime rates but also a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective solutions. As a community, we must address the root causes of this violence—whether through better education, stronger community engagement, or enhanced Policing. It's essential that we work together to make our streets safer for everyone. #LondonCrime #PublicSafety #CommunityAction

I’ve never promoted a book before its release, but I’m making an exception for Peter Moskos’ upcoming work, “𝘽𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙠: 𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙔𝙋𝘿 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙔𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝘾𝙞𝙩𝙮’𝙨 𝙀𝙭𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙧𝙮 1990𝙨 𝘾𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝘿𝙧𝙤𝙥,”https://lnkd.in/esmv4y92 Not only did I pre-order it, but I’m also strongly recommending it. Why? Because the crux of this book is critical: 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 “𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴.” The tools and strategies Moskos highlights resonate deeply and include: ✅ 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 ✅ 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗕𝗜𝗔𝘀 ✅ Focusing on repeat offenders ✅ Addressing outstanding warrants ✅ 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 ✅ Helping homeless individuals transition into shelters ✅ 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 ✅ 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ✅ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺-𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 Reading about these strategies made my day because just yesterday, I shared how Ottawa is primed for such a collaborative approach. While Moskos’ book is yet to be released, we can proudly say that Ottawa has implemented these approaches before. And today, we have even more tools, partnerships, and opportunities to do it again—this time, better than ever. The time is ripe for revitalized, proactive collaboration in community safety and well-being. https://lnkd.in/egKHPp6a
