Reality There's a saying that common sense is a finite resource, yet the population is continuing to increase. This is know as a tragedy of the commons. We see this played out in many aspects of our physical and digital realms, from pollution, over-fishing, the digital divide, water resources, etc. However as bad as all these are I'd argue that the finite resource we call common sense is likely to send humanity to the edge of the precipice and beyond faster than most others above. Why? Because we've forgotten how to question things Why? Because we blindly accept what's told to us Why? Because we don't challenge Why? Because we simply don't think Why? Because we're overwhelmed and want simplicity We fail to take into account ALL the possible angles, options, likelihoods, consequences, probabilities of reality, and all too often accept what's served up TO us as reality because it's easier, simpler, and causes less hassle than actually having TO think for ourselves. Which is why the image with this post of a former US president (Roosevelt) with "the last living" Triceratops has been legitimately circulating round the Internet. On one hand we are presented with the image of a former US president having apparently shot the last Triceratops back in 1909, on the other hand we have a rather well placed blending of images thanks to an inventive/innovative online social media user. LOGIC says this shouldn't be so... But logic take common sense And that seems to be in short supply according to a whole LOT of folks online whom for the last several years have been talking about this AND other more far fetched conspiracies. Finally Seeing the Light at the End of the Tunnel It’s been a long road, but I’m proud to say that Kev Cook Security is finally being taken seriously as a professional and trustworthy company. All kidding aside, I feel like this is a good opportunity to talk about something that I think it changing in the security industry.... for the better. It used to be that security teams felt that in order to provide the security their organization required, they needed the latest fancy tool with 'revolutionary' features. This mindset started a cycle of rip-and-replace where just as teams we're getting used to a platform, it was gone for the next big fancy thing. And so was all their hard work. But I think that is changing. We're seeing the whole industry (often being lead by the practitioners, finally!) start to re-align not on fancy features but on actual core concepts in security like visibility and behaviorally-based content. This change isn't being driven by spending millions on new tools, but on often minimal-cost (or even free!) solutions coupled with hard work by hunters, analysts and detection engineers.
