Our #5 key trend in class action litigation examines the flood of claims targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and “greenwashing” class actions. Setting the stage for this area of litigation was the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2023 decision in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. (SFFA), et al. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College, 600 U.S. 181 (2023), in which it ruled 6-3 that the admissions policies of Harvard University and the University of North Carolina violated the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. https://lnkd.in/dnxzyYkY

Shumaker lawyers Bennett Speyer and Bob Boland authored an article in LEAD1 Association discussing why it is still critically important for colleges and universities to have a structurally independent, yet collaborative collective in 2024 and beyond, despite the changed NCAA guidance and likely House antitrust settlement, which will allow schools to bring their collectives in-house or into much closer collaboration. I got a warm reception when I auditioned the “bonsai theory of innovation” in a recent conversation with Ben Wildavsky Chegg Inc. Center for Digital Learning. So now I’m trying the written version out on you, my latest in Forbes, link below. https://lnkd.in/eNBasdig #innovation #culture #changemanagement #futureofhighereducation.

Today marks the 70 year anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. On May 17, 1954, a decision in the Brown v. Board of Education case declared the “separate but equal” doctrine unconstitutional. Today we recognize this monumental decision. Today we also recognize that much work remains. #EDLINKS #EducatingTheNewHumanity to #AwakenAndLiftHumanity to #SeeGoodDoBetter

"To those who hope to cultivate the next generation of academic leadership, my advice is pretty simple. Believe that vision and innovation and change management are essential. Think about recruiting executives with different experiences, backgrounds, and skills. Ask your candidates for their big ideas about the institution and about the future of higher education — and pay special attention if you find someone who has tended a bonsai." Great words of wisdom from our Academic Advisor, Ann Kirschner, in her new piece for Forbes. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eNBasdig

Location, location, location ... transformational plans for Georgetown students, professors, leadership and vital degree programs to be near the epicenter of change so desperately needed in business, environment, health, and technology
For more than 235 years, Washington, D.C., has been Georgetown’s home—from our founding on the Hilltop to our Georgetown University Law Center’s presence near Capitol Hill for 150 years. Our University has grown since our founding and so has our impact as a leading institution in Washington, D.C. Today, we are positioned for even greater impact—as we invest in our Hilltop Campus and in our new Capitol Campus, just blocks from the U.S. Capitol. Our new Capitol Campus will provide a home for academic programs across all of our schools, allowing us to expand and support campus life and infrastructure across our University. This fall marks an important moment in the development of the Capitol Campus, as the Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy begins classes in its new home at 125 E Street NW. Last week, I (sadly) bid farewell to my exceptional and thoughtful students in my Critical Race Studies course at University of California, Hastings College of the Law (now UC Law San Francisco). In these times, it is crucial to methodically study how law shapes race and vice versa. I am grateful for all that I have learned and continue to learn from my students and friends in the Critical Race Studies Program at University of California, Los Angeles - School of Law. #criticalracestudies #racematters #lawschool #lawprofessor
