Public K-12 is often considered a public good. Why not higher education? Thx to Yolanda Watson Spiva and CCA for continuing the discussion. How do we frame our conversations around this ‘public good?’ Living and working a state focused on economic and workforce development, I see a pretty clear linkage between the value of post sec as a public good and the continued identification and development of more opps for all South Carolinians. Instead of why … ask why not?
"To restore public trust in higher education — which can increase participation in our democracy and improve civic culture — we must reframe higher education as a public good." - CCA President Yolanda Watson Spiva, Ph.D., BCC. Dr. Watson Spiva has been in Indianapolis today, presenting and meeting with higher education and policy leaders from across the country as part of the Civic Learning and Democracy Engagement Coalition, of which CCA is a lead partner. #CCADoesTheWork

Join us Wednesday, 9/11/24 from 6-7:30 pm ET for a free webinar + Q&A on key national financial aid (FAFSA) updates, tips, and policies, organized by myself and Erick Deshaun Dorris at Young Invincibles, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education, UnidosUS (@WeAreUnidosUS), Presidents' Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration , National College Attainment Network (NCAN), and the State of Illinois - Illinois Student Assistance Commission. The panel will feature a variety of education stakeholder perspectives, including, crucially, student voices, young adult voices, and those from marginalized communities. Register ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eCkCDhQj The federal government just rolled out the new #BetterFAFSA form and in we NYS just passed our Universal FAFSA policy. It behooves us all, as education professionals and policy leaders especially, to help ensure our systems provide financial aid access and support to every student who wants to earn any type of (postsecondary) degree after high school, and completing the FAFSA is the most crucial first step in the process. We'll briefly discuss current and longstanding barriers and inequities to FAFSA completion, the impact it has on college enrollment, persistence, graduation, and workforce/employment outcomes, and what we can do to help increase financial aid awareness, support, and completion from high school to college and graduate school. We'll also hear directly from the U.S. Department of Education about many of the new changes to the improved FAFSA form, funding formula, remaining challenges, and changes soon to come. Finally, we'll includes lots of free FAFSA/financial aid support services and resources, from StudentAid.gov, supports for mixed-status families and DACA students/DREAMers, first-generation college students, and much more. It takes a village, but we're #TogetherInvincible. --- #DoTheFAFSA #FAFSA #FinancialAid #HigherEducation #Enrollment #degrees #college #career #cte #dreamers #daca #higherEd #edChat #cradleToCollege #cradleToCareer #educationequity

Will you join the protest? To add to the points below: the proposed study delay fine risks undermining the accessibility of higher education, particularly for already disadvantaged groups.
On Monday, November 25th, I’ll be joining staff, students and supporters in The Hague for the national protest against the drastic budget cuts in higher education. A billion euros in cuts will have a profound impact on the quality of education and research, with significant losses for both staff and students: - Small programs with fewer students are at risk of termination - Temporary contracts won't be renewed - Hiring and promotion opportunities are on hold - Work pressure continues to rise to unsustainable levels Will you stand with us in The Hague to protect the future of higher education? - Where: Malieveld, The Hague - When: Monday, November 25th, 13:00 - 15:00

Championing the importance of a diverse higher education sector - a new GuildHE manifesto. The higher education sector is made up of a huge range of providers - including conservatoires, smaller universities and specialist institutions - delivering a wide variety of learning environments, course types and qualification routes. The UK higher education sector is stronger for being diverse providing choice for students and education often in remote parts of the UK. However, the financial pressures facing higher education place this diversity at risk. We make a number of recommendations to protect and enhance this diversity to enable both students and higher education institutions to thrive. #universities #highereducation #highered #GE2024 #GeneralElection
GuildHE is today launching the ‘Championing a Diverse Higher Education Sector Manifesto‘ with a series of 7 key recommendations to the next government to enable students and higher education providers to thrive. Read the manifesto ➡ https://bit.ly/3x5GzPS

Though I’m not yet formally in post, I’m happy to share the GuildHE manifesto containing key recommendations for the next government. Our focus must remain on championing the diversity of our sector. It’s richness is derived from its wide variety of providers; some large, some medium-sized, some small; some more traditional, some very new; some providing on-campus, off-campus, blended learning or all 3; all delivering to towns, cities and regions across the devolved nations, enabling students of all ages to undertake lifelong learning that improves their lives, careers and experiences. There is no one-size fits all, and unless we think creatively, we risk losing the diversity that makes UK HE so attractive to both domestic and international students. Not only that, a less attractive, strong and robust system would weaken the UK’s soft power around the world at a time we need to be showing ourselves as deep and meaningful collaborative partners to tackle global challenges. I look forward to working with my GuildHE team and many of you in (and outwith) the sector to secure the strength and diversity of our sector!
