I’m passionate about creating a world where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can thrive. Disability inclusion is not just a necessity but a celebration of our diverse human potential. Innovative solutions are the key to breaking down barriers and ensuring that everyone can participate fully in society. One of the most transformative areas is assistive technology. Speech recognition software and screen readers have revolutionized how individuals with disabilities interact with the digital world. These tools enable those with mobility and visual impairments to communicate, learn, and work independently, opening up new possibilities for personal and professional growth. Inclusive design in architecture and urban planning is another critical innovation. By incorporating universal design principles, we can create spaces that are accessible to all. This includes features like ramps, wide doorways, and sensor-based navigation aids. Such thoughtful design ensures that public spaces are welcoming and usable for everyone, fostering a more inclusive community. Wondering when our policy makers will start ensuring that spaces are welcoming and usable for people with limited mobility? Lastly, digital inclusion through accessible websites and adaptive gaming is making the online world more inclusive. By following guidelines like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), we ensure that digital content is accessible to everyone. Adaptive gaming allows individuals with various disabilities to enjoy and participate in the digital entertainment world, promoting social interaction and enjoyment. Together, these innovative solutions pave the way for a more inclusive society where everyone can contribute and succeed. I just returned from the USA after vacation and have a newfound appreciation for accessibility there. Comparing it to India, where infrastructure for people with disabilities is still growing, it's eye-opening to see how well accessibility is integrated in the US. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the hard work of disability rights organizations deserve much credit for this. Ramps, elevators with audio cues, and designated parking spots aren't just conveniences; they're symbols of empowerment. But my observations didn't stop at physical accessibility. In today's digital age, so much of our lives happen online. For people with disabilities, inaccessible interfaces can be tremendous obstacles. Now, I see digital accessibility from a different lens. It's not just about running tests—it's about inclusion. Digital accessibility isn't just a service—it's essential for people's lives. It's about making systems more accessible for everyone. It's beyond automated or manual tests; it's about inclusion. Everyone needs to step up—from leadership to content authors. Digital Accessibility is a holistic approach. Everyone has a role to play: ✅ Leaders to make accessibility a top priority, not an afterthought. ✅ Clients prioritize accessibility in their online presence, not only for the sake of complaint but also for inclusion. ✅ Business Analysts ensure user stories include diverse needs. ✅ Designers must create interfaces accessible to all. ✅ Developers should build with accessibility best practices. ✅ Testers need to identify accessibility barriers. ✅ Content Authors make the content friendly for people with impairments, easily readable, and understandable. We're creating, designing, developing new things constantly, and during those processes nobody seems to question if we should include “abled” people in our decisions. Yet, whenever we bring up accessibility the return question I hear often is “Do we even have disabled users?”. Every so often, there is an even stronger stance: “We don't have disabled users”! Which is a complete and utter illusion! I've put “abled” in quotes earlier for a reason. As much as 1 in every 3 people identifies as having a disability. And that's not even including people who have temporary or situational disabilities. Everyone will, at some point in their lives, encounter a situation where they are disabled. Some people are born with a disability, some acquire one during their lives and have to live with it, some people break an arm and spend a few weeks in a cast. The likelihood of your product not having disabled users at all, is slim to none. I'd like to think that the “we didn't know” card has long expired, but it's not the case. There is still an enormous lack of understanding and missing insights. Accessibility is still missing in education too often. You should be taking disabled people into account just as much, and not doing so is exclusion, potentially ableist and discriminatory. Design and build products with accessibility in mind, and include people with disabilities in your research. People with disabilities and people without disabilities - aren’t two sets of people. They’re the same people - all of us - over time. Organizations have a legal, moral and commercial responsibility to ensure that digital products can be used by people with disabilities. WCAG is the most globally used and commonly understood set of accessibility guidelines used by organisations to ensure the accessibility of websites, apps and other digital comms for people with disabilities. It's the yard stick by which the accessibility of digital products is usually measured. However, while it is brilliant in many areas, there are many elements of accessibility and needs of people with disabilities that the current version of WCAG (2.2) doesn't adequately cover.
