Environmental, social and governance (ESG) can be complex and challenging, but it is a necessary framework for today’s organisations. To ensure all requirements are met, a deep understanding of governance is crucial. J. Andrés Domínguez-Gómez and Teresa González-Gómez explore the concept of governance and its development by revealing the four most common governance models used in the mining industry – corporative governance, contextual governance, meta-governance and environmental governance – while considering the balancing of social and ecological impacts. **Key Findings from my stakeholder thesis:** 1. **Low Stakeholder Engagement:** There is a significant gap between the stated commitment to stakeholder engagement by mining firms and the actual experiences of community members. 2. **Inadequate Implementation of Sustainability Frameworks:** A majority of respondents (61%) believe that Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) are not thoroughly conducted by mining firms. The same is true for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies, with 82% expressing skepticism about their implementation. 3. **Mismatch Between Company Reports and Reality:** While mining firms report efforts to address community grievances and environmental concerns, community feedback suggests that these reports are often inconsistent with on-ground realities. **Conclusions and Recommendations:** 🔍 **Revisiting CSR and ESG:** There is a need to shift from Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, which are often self-regulated and sporadic, to more enforceable and comprehensive ESG frameworks. This shift would ensure that mining activities are both sustainable and beneficial to local communities. 🗣️ **Enhanced Stakeholder Engagement:** Policy interventions should focus on mandating regular, transparent, and inclusive engagements between mining firms and local communities. This could help bridge the gap in expectations and foster a collaborative approach to sustainable mining. 👥 **Policy Reforms:** The government should enforce laws that ensure all mining firms adhere strictly to sustainable practices, with a focus on environmental preservation and community well-being. **Together, we can pave the way for a more sustainable and responsible mining sector in Ghana! 🌍**

EBRD and EU launch joint equity investment facility for critical raw materials: “💶Facility worth €50 million expected to mobilise another €50 million, Investments to support digitalisation and the green transition ♻️ The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union (EU) have launched a joint facility to provide equity investments for the exploration of critical and strategic raw materials, aiming to mobilise up to €100 million in investments. These raw materials are essential to the EU’s digital and green transition. The EU is developing sustainable projects for critical raw materials to reduce the risk of potential supply-chain disruptions. This will ensure that industrial sectors have the necessary resources while maintaining EU environmental and social standards. The new joint facility will support the objectives of the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act and the REPowerEU Plan.”

Recently, Todd Warren, Portfolio Manager of Tribeca’s 2050 Strategy & Head of Research for the Global Natural Resources Strategy, participated in a panel discussion at The Natural Resources Matinée, hosted by Investability IR. The discussion covered Todd and the other panellists’ expectations for the commodity sector outlook and their unique perspectives on current market beliefs. Todd shared his optimism for 2024, citing a reversal of bearish sentiment, more balanced views on China, and changing perceptions of inflation. He also highlighted the upside potential of copper, even without AI or decarbonization projects, due to the extremely tight market. Additionally, Todd emphasized how the Australian mining industry is well-positioned to capitalize on decarbonization and critical minerals trends. He pointed out that Australia’s familiarity with the resource sector provides a clear avenue for raising capital to take advantage of the country's abundant critical minerals. Furthermore, he noted Australia's mining-friendly jurisdiction and the substantial global investments already committed to clean energy assets, ensuring robust demand well into the future. 𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝟭𝟮𝟭 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗮   ESS was proud to sponsor and participate in the 121 Mining Conference, and our Managing Director was a panel speaker for the 30th Mining Indaba in Cape Town.   ESG and sustainability were key topics and a major part of this year’s theme, and the ESS team engaged in a wide variety of thought-provoking discussions on the current trends and challenges shaping the global mining industry landscape.   Some key insights from the conferences: ✅ 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: Many projects in Africa have one or more missing infrastructure links that block the development of the project. Significant finance is being brought to bear, lead by Africa Finance Corporation, Africa50 Infrastructure Investment Platform and others, to create the conditions for economic success. It is essential that these infrastructure projects consider the ESG implications of cumulative impacts to ensure that environmental and social conditions are not worsened as a result of this success. ✅ 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗦𝗚 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀: It’s not ESG’s fault if your project sits within a national park, just as it’s not the financial market’s fault if the project is not profitable and no-one wants to invest. Companies who fail to integrate ESG and sustainability considerations into the project design, are destined to face significant ESG barriers when looking for finance. ✅ 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: Increasingly, the promise of economic development due to a project is becoming less important to impacted stakeholders in Africa. But communities have a huge impact on the success of projects – and regularly exercise their power to disrupt projects that don’t proactively share benefits. Models such as those used by indigenous communities in Canada, or others where a percentage of the profit averaged over time is accorded to each family in communities directly impacted by a project, can ensure that communities don’t set fire to the project.   The ESS team had the opportunity to connect in person with many valued clients and potential future partners, and we return to work energised in continuing to implement HSEC, ESG and sustainability solutions across Africa and emerging economies.   We look forward to next year’s conference, and the ESS Managing Director, Adrian Mill, will continue the year’s conference circuit at the PDAC in Toronto, Canada in March.   #ESG #Environmentalandsocialsustainability #Environment #EnvironmentalManagement #SustainableDevelopment #Sustainability #miningindaba2024 #EsgInvesting
