🚨In the last decade, 34 people have lost their life through workplace transport incidents and 162 people were seriously injured. This January, the Health & Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) launched a crucial safe driving campaign to address this urgent issue. As safety professionals, we must ask: Are we doing enough to prevent these tragedies? How can we better implement and maintain safety protocols? Remember: Accredited Training for all work machinery is vital, but safety requires continuous management and vigilance. HSENI Principal Inspector Anne Boylan emphasises: "Employers are responsible for managing risks... This includes thorough risk assessments, safe work systems, training, supervision, and monitoring." Few things are more professionally rewarding than having the opportunity to attend, participate, and present at a valued client’s internal safety and health conference, especially when the client’s stated goal is to become best in class safety-wise, not just minimally compliant. Contrary to what some folks argue on the other side, there are quite a few truly good employers who care about employee safety, and work diligently to make safety a core value.

Many will have seen the latest PMSC health check trends were published last week covering the period from 2021-23. Although no particular theme emerged, it is interesting that the 'duties and powers' category still had the most observations / non-conformities (14%). This was broken down into: - a lack of awareness of the full range of the duties and powers of an organisation; - a lack of periodic review of the duties and powers to ensure their suitability to address the current needs of the organisation; - a lack of practical enforcement policies; and - a need for SHA’s to engage with third parties operating within their jurisdiction to support PMSC compliance and ensure that the Marine SMS (Safety Management System) covers or is complementary to the third party’s operation. Some can be common across companies like “always de-energize equipment before working on it”, while others may be very specific to a particular company and its operations. Historically, they have often been implemented with some form of “zero tolerance” policy that says something like “if you violate these rules you will be disciplined, up to and including termination”.Some people say cardinal rules are critical to strong safety performance, while others say “get rid of them”.
