Have you heard of BASIS (Baby Sleep Information Source)? It’s an incredibly valuable project of the Durham Infancy and Sleep Centre (DISC), in the Department of Anthropology at Durham University UK. The aim of Basis (the Baby Sleep Information Source) is to provide access to research based evidence about biologically normal infant sleep, in forms that are accessible to parents and health practitioners, supported by references to research relevant to families in the UK. We conceptualise ‘biologically normal infant sleep’ as being the sleep of babies who are exclusively or predominantly breastfed to at least 6 months of age and cared for in a responsive manner. We do not consider sleep training methods that require leaving babies alone for sleep in the first year of life to be biologically normal. ‘In many families the issue of where a baby sleeps is never questioned. Cultural rules or assumptions specify ‘the normal place’ for infant sleep within a given society — whether that be a cot or crib in a specially prepared nursery, a futon on the floor along-side the mother, or strapped to the mother’s body in a sling. In Western 21st century, where environments for infant sleep may vary from household to household, recommendations for where babies sleep are made on the basis of enhancing infant safety. Reducing the number of sudden and unexpected infant deaths during sleep (from accidents or unknown causes) is the principal reason why guidance on ‘where babies sleep’ is issued by Health Departments and other organisations’. If there’s one piece of advice I wish I had been given before becoming a parent, it’s this: prioritize sleep - for your baby AND yourself. 💤 As a mom of three and a pediatric sleep coach, I know how tempting it is to use your baby’s nap time to sit down for a meal, take a shower, or scroll through social media (we’ve all been there!). But prioritizing sleep isn’t just about going to bed when your baby does, it’s about learning how to teach your baby healthy sleep habits from day one. A consistent routine and understanding sleep patterns early on can save you countless sleepless nights and anxious moments. What’s the one piece of advice you wish someone had given you before having kids? Did you know that your state of mind directly affects your baby’s sleep? When caregivers are stressed or anxious, babies pick up on that energy, making it harder for them to relax and fall asleep. In fact, research shows that when a parent is stressed, babies are 30% more likely to struggle with falling asleep and staying asleep. By learning healthy sleep habits and creating a calm environment, you can help your baby sleep soundly and reduce nighttime stress. As a certified sleep coach, I’ll guide you through gentle methods to ensure both you and your baby can enjoy restful nights. Let's work together to bring peace to bedtime for your whole family. 💕 Comment "SLEEP" to book your complimentary discovery call! 🌙 #mylittledreamer #BabySleep #SleepTraining #SleepCoach #HealthySleepHabits #Paranting #newmom #miamisleepcoach #pediatricsleepcoach #pediatricsleep
