10 ways to improve your relationship with a bad boss ⤵️ 1. Practice empathy 2. Assume good intent 3. Give them clear feedback 4. Re-structure your 1-on-1s 5. Understand their professional goals 6. Assume they’re making reasonable choices 7. Get clarity on their relationship with the CEO 8. Consider how you’re contributing to the issue 9. Be curious about their relationship with their boss 10. "Stop taking yourself so seriously." I'll never forget my boss telling me this during a performance review. I was 20 at the time. I think I blacked out and hoped the ground would swallow me up. Ten years later I'm like, ok I get it now!! What my boss meant was, take your job seriously, but don't take yourself too seriously. Because then you stop being you. There's this pressure in life and work to show up and do it 'right.' You're on camera, you're on stage, you're writing a LinkedIn post. It needs to be good. Perfect, even. It has to be short, clear, to the point, more white space, less adjectives, less theory, more insight… But where's the individuality in that? Aren't we then just showing up as someone we think we need to be, rather than who we really are? I feel like the more we try and control (a.k.a stifle), the less room we leave for the real stuff. The fun, the personality, the chaos. Isn't that what we all want to connect with anyway? Heck most of us don't know what we're doing, so we may as well laugh about it. If anyone wants to let their freak flag fly, I'm here for it. You'll *actually* stand out.

Be mindful of the company you keep. When you are with the wrong crowd, they see you as competition. They look at you with the eyes of envy. Some even speak ill behind your back and hope for your failure. Learn to observe people’s behaviour. The Almighty often sends warning signs.

Ghosting: Why do we get ghosted by people in our own organisations more than we do by external partners? Is it because there is less likely to be a commercial consequence? Is it because we’re asking people to do things they don’t want to do? Or asking questions people don’t have the answers for? Is it because internal partners/colleagues are not as valued as clients or key supply chain partners? Or is it cultural? Whatever it is, it needs to change. We need to treat each other like clients, with the appropriate deference and respect due. If we’re working together, we should be working together. And as such respect each other’s priorities and goals as we do those of our clients. Let’s stop ignoring each other, saying ‘we’re too busy’ or deprioritising each other’s interests and start engaging, start supporting and seeing each others worth.
