I found the LinkedIn post from Ephraim Gopin, MBA fascinating regarding how charities and #nonprofits ask for donations. With the Canada Post strike no mail from charities is getting through and the requests are coming via email and social media posts. Many are asking for money saying they are short of their goals (which is true for most organizations as giving is down and need is up). As Ephraim points out, "Lead with IMPACT and how their donation will make the world a better place. Do that and you won't just hit your goals but you'll surpass them." Your donations can have impact and solve a problem. - For $2.70 Hope Mission can provide a complete Christmas dinner. - For $50 Christmas Bureau of Edmonton Adopt-A-Teen program gives teens in need joy during the season. - For every $200 Little Warriors receives a sexually abused child receives one trauma therapy session (among many) that gives healing and hope for a brighter future. I encourage you to give to an organization that means a lot to you and is making an impact in someone's life. These three organizations mean a lot to me 🧡 #givingback #makingadifference

I got that in an email a few days ago. Being short of their goal is a YOU problem, not a DONOR problem. Don't make the email subscriber feel bad that you're not reaching some arbitrary goal number you picked out of a hat two weeks ago. That does not build relationships. It does the opposite. Lead with IMPACT and how their donation will make the world a better place. Do that and you won't just hit your goals but you'll surpass them. For the love of everything good in our sector, please don't lead with your internal fundraising (and/or marketing) goal. It's ok to mention it but lead with impact and change. That's how you connect and engage your audience and build relationships with them. P.S. I'm busy reviewing a whole mess of year-end emails for a bunch of nonprofits. You can do way better than the below!
