Yesterday was the first (last) day of high school for seniors across the country. And I had the privilege of volunteering at Fridley High School as a workshop leader for College & Career Day. I talked about digital marketing as a career path with high school seniors on their first (last) day of school. I shared knowledge about how to succeed with digital marketing as a career, but the biggest piece of advice I gave was... Choose anything. Because when you don't choose, the world chooses for you. Your family, your friends, your fears, your past, social expectations-all of these influencing factors will fill in the gaps when your conviction is absent. I don't know that anyone ever truly "finds" oneself. But I do know that each of us is responsible for creating ourselves. So choose what feels good to you. Choose something hard. Choose something fun. Choose something healthy. Choose something that makes you feel alive. I think that's as true for high school seniors as it is for me today. It reminds me of the James Clear book Atomic Habits: "Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity." So whether you're a high school senior or a senior manager or a junior associate or a CEO, every day you are given the gift of choosing how you create yourself. The great news is you can always change your mind ❤️

Over the next twelve months, we’re diving into how giving back looks outside the United States and beyond the traditional Western philanthropic view we’re used to. Send this to your high schoolers =) I spoke to hospitality students at Patchogue-Medford High School today and shared some of the key lessons I’ve learned, with them. Play the Long Game – Building a meaningful career is a marathon, not a sprint. Every step counts, even when it doesn’t feel like it. Always Be Kind and Aim to Give – Your kindness and generosity will come back in ways you can't imagine. It builds trust, which is invaluable. Use Every Opportunity to Grow – Work hard in every role you take on, even volunteer positions. These experiences help shape you and open doors for you. Align Your Work with Your Values – Working in places that don’t share your values can drain you. Find or create a space where you feel aligned. Don’t Wait to Make an Impact – You don’t have to wait for the "perfect" job or position. Start making a difference now, wherever you are. Be Open to What Comes – Your career can be built on opportunities you didn’t always see coming. Being open and adaptable makes all the difference. Stay True to Your Vision – At the end of the day, you can create your own business to stay aligned with your values. Your work can be about community and impact as well as financial success. After years of learning from my neighboring business owners, I’ve seen firsthand how dedication to community can drive a business forward. Their examples have shaped my own path and inspired the mission behind my work every day.

Spring break is the perfect time for high school seniors to prepare for college by creating a road map, getting to know themselves better, visiting colleges, volunteering, practicing life skills, taking part-time jobs, finding mentors, and compartmentalising tasks. We just got notified of a generous gift from a foundation today. It just increased the value of our residency program. We can now argue that Student Teaching for a year with us helps you enter the classroom in a healthy way so you don't have to be the teacher of record while also learning how to teach while taking classes at the same time! Many future teachers take on classrooms too early in their careers because they NEED the money (I get it I had to). What if there was a different way? What if you could get paid what a university intern or district intern got paid and still didn't have to be responsible for grades, lesson planning, parent conferences, meetings, etc... until you actually graduated with your credential?
