The Thanjavur Big Temple or Thanjavur Brihadeeswarar Temple, is one of the unsung world wonders with many unknown architectural secrets that still keeps the people excited after 1000 years. There are boundless wonders inside the Thanjavur Temple, which will definitely realign the list of world wonders in the upcoming days. It is one of the most attractive tourist places in Tamil Nadu which makes people from other countries know about the Chola Kingdom and their advanced architectural mind. The most surprising factor is that the shadow of the vimana or kalasam of the Thanjavur temple will not fall on the ground. It is still a mystery for the researchers how the shadow is not falling. #snsinstitutions #designthinking #snsdesignthinkers

The Ghat of Yamuna: 'Beholding the River' Located on the Vishram Ghat in Mathura, which served as a pivotal locus of architectural elements in Braj, Sati Burj is a commemorative tower commissioned by Raja Bhagwant Das of Amer. Completed in 1570, this 55 feet high tower is dedicated to the mother of Raja Bhagwant Das who had committed the act of sati (a practice of self immolation on the death of the husband as a testimony to faithfulness) for his father. Given the affinity between the rulers of Amer and the Mughal emperor, the architectural style of the Burj was heavily influenced by the Mughal architectural style. The main doorway is dotted with various ritualistic images of yantras, one of the most interesting being the panchkona yantra, a five pointed star symbolising the five mahabhutas- ether, air, fire, water and earth. This is accompanied by the symbol of Lotus which is used as a tool for concentration during meditative practices. The viewing window atop the structure functioned as an optical apparatus and would've provided an unhindered view of the flowing Yamuna river and the pilgrimage practices conducted on the Vishram Ghat. The viewing of Yamuna becomes an important act if one considers the authoritative text Haribhaktivilasa, a 16th century authoritative text for ritualistic practices which describes the function of Yamuna: 'The river Saraswati purifies one after three days. The river Narmada purifies one after seven weeks. The river Ganga purified one immediately. Yamuna purifies one who beholds it.' Therefore the darshan of the river in itself becomes a ritualistic beholding which in turn acts as a tool for purification. #mathura #ghatsofmathura #heritage #natureculture

The Virupaksha Temple at Hampi Bazaar is often the first Vijaynagar monument that visitors explore. In and around this temple complex are shrines that predate the founding of Vijaynagar in the 14th AD. The tall and imposing eastern gopuram of the temple however, which dominates Hampi Bazaar and is visible from far away, is from the 19th AD on an earlier base. This is also the only large temple in the Sacred Center that is still in active use. In fact it is an important regional religious center, as people come from near and far to cremate their deceased and immerse their ashes in the nearby ghats along the Tungabhadra River. And like so many temples in southern India that have been in active use over the centuries, the Virupaksha Temple contains an assortment of architectural elements from different centuries. The mahamandap (large pavilion in front of the sanctum area) of the Virupaksha Temple was added in the early 16th c (1510 AD), in front of the older sanctum shrine. This is an important structure historically because it is the first example of a style of mandap (pavilion) and mandap elements that became central features of Vijaynagar temple architecture in the 16th and 17th centuries, and can be seen in temple additions from this period across south India, since the Vijaynagar rulers and nobles commissioned temple additions prolifically. #Karnataka #Hampi #incredibleindia

9 reasons why the Brihadeeswara Temple in Tamil Nadu, is one of the greatest structures ever built. 1. The Mandir is built using the interlock method where no cement, plaster or adhesive was used between the stones. It has survived 1000 years and 6 earthquakes. 2. The Mandir tower at 216 feet was likely the tallest in the world at the time. 3. The other structures built using this method Big Ben and Leaning Tower of Pisa are tilting with time. The Mandir which is far older has zero degree inclination. 4. 130,000 tons of granite was used to build the Mandir which was transported by 3000 elephants from 60 kms away 5. The Mandir was constructed without digging the earth. There was no foundation dug for the Mandir! 6. The Kumbham at the top of the Mandir tower weighs 80 tons and is monolithic. Yes monolithic! Craved from a single stone 7. Several theories exist as to how the 80 ton stone piece got atop the 200+ feet tower. Some suggest the use of levitation technology, but the more plausible explaination seems to be the use of elephants to pull the stone piece across a nearly 6 km long ramp. 8. It is said that several underground passages exist below the Mandir, most of whichwere sealed off centuries ago. It is said that these underground passages were safety traps and exit points for the Cholas. Some souces put the count of these passages to 100 9. The Mandir is so remarkable that some people go the the extent of saying that it was built by aliens. There is nothing quite like the Brihadeeswara Mandir and there will never be something quite like it. Raja Raja Chola was a visionary. We must treasure this timeless marvel. #hindutemple #incredibleindia #architecture #india #hindustan #Bharat #indian #ancestors #worldwidehindutemples #vedictemples #pathyasolutions #India
