🌍🧒 This #WorldChildrensDay, mothers2mothers (m2m) is highlighting our work to support orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in sub-Saharan Africa. For children in these communities, the challenges can be immense—from losing a parent to HIV to growing up in stigmatised or resource-scarce environments. They started as a children's home, they stopped; they now strengthen families to prevent separation! This family strengthening model allows families to move past a cycle of need-based dependency and into a dynamic that enables and empowers parents well into the future. When families are supported appropriately, children thrive. And when children thrive, communities are transformed. And the great news is — what is best for children also turns out to be the most cost-effective. Empowering Vulnerable Communities with SADECO and The Giving Genie 🧞♀️ SADECO reaches remote communities to support orphaned children and their caregivers through “Empoderamento das Crianças Órfãs e Suas Cuidadoras” initiative. The goal is to improve access to education, healthcare, nutrition, and civil rights for those affected by challenges like HIV/AIDS. Key Highlights of This Week's Home Visits Recent Meeting: Discussed urgent needs for food, clothing, and medical adherence among orphaned children. Action Steps: 1.Appeal for food and school supplies from local businesses. 2.Coordinate with social services for additional support. 3.Organize meals for children and caregivers. 🧞♀️Genie Safe Initiative: In partnership with SADECO we will educate students on safety and emergency preparedness, fostering resilience within the community. 🦸🏾♀️Empower Her Program: In collaboration with SADECO , we are empowering girls in extreme poverty through workshops and mentorship in various vocational skills. September 30th is National Truth and Reconciliation Day. This is more than recognizing a day. This day needs to be an acknowledgement and understanding of the continuing intergenerational trauma impacting Indigenous Peoples, their culture, families, and their communities. As we come to the end of an era, there needs to be acknowledgement of the ongoing imbalance of power maintained by the Doctrine of Discovery, and the deportation of Indigenous Peoples from their lands and from their original histories, languages and cultural. The TRC 94 Calls to Action (CTAs) are indicated in two categories: (1) Legacy (one to 42) and (2) Reconciliation (43 to 94). It is a call to action! National Truth and Reconciliation Day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities and the ongoing impact on Indigenous Peoples. Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30th. The orange shirt is a symbol of the terrible history of Residential Schools, the loss of culture, freedom and trauma experienced by Indigenous children and their communities over many generations. “Every Child Matters.” For the month of September and beyond, take the time to understand the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action and the actionable policy recommendations meant to aid the healing process for Indigenous Peoples in two ways: (1) acknowledging the full, horrifying history of the residential schools system, and (2) creating systems to meaningfully and permanently dismantle the systemic racism that leads to worse health outcomes, and limited economic opportunities for Indigenous Peoples. Supporting Older Adults Living with HIV in Social Care A growing number of people living with HIV in the UK are aged 65 and over and advances in treatment mean more individuals are living longer and healthier lives with HIV. Yet, as they age, many face unique challenges, including stigma, isolation, and gaps in tailored social care. Stigma remains a barrier, with many older adults hesitant to seek support or disclose their status due to fear of discrimination from care and support providers or peers. Isolation is a reality for many as some lose connections with communities and networks that supported them once they move into social care settings or are unable to get out and attend community groups. Nearly 55% of older adults (65+) diagnosed with HIV are identified at a late stage, highlighting missed opportunities for early intervention and care. As social care providers we must ensure that people aging with HIV live with dignity, support, and belonging. It’s time to recognise that HIV is no longer just a young person’s condition - For some it’s a lifelong journey that deserves our full support at every stage. #HIVAwareness #SocialCare #EndingStigma
