September 30th is National Truth and Reconciliation Day. This is more than recognizing a day. This day needs to be an acknowledgement and understanding of the continuing intergenerational trauma impacting Indigenous Peoples, their culture, families, and their communities. As we come to the end of an era, there needs to be acknowledgement of the ongoing imbalance of power maintained by the Doctrine of Discovery, and the deportation of Indigenous Peoples from their lands and from their original histories, languages and cultural. The TRC 94 Calls to Action (CTAs) are indicated in two categories: (1) Legacy (one to 42) and (2) Reconciliation (43 to 94). It is a call to action!
National Truth and Reconciliation Day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities and the ongoing impact on Indigenous Peoples. Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30th. The orange shirt is a symbol of the terrible history of Residential Schools, the loss of culture, freedom and trauma experienced by Indigenous children and their communities over many generations. “Every Child Matters.”
For the month of September and beyond, take the time to understand the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action and the actionable policy recommendations meant to aid the healing process for Indigenous Peoples in two ways: (1) acknowledging the full, horrifying history of the residential schools system, and (2) creating systems to meaningfully and permanently dismantle the systemic racism that leads to worse health outcomes, and limited economic opportunities for Indigenous Peoples.
