Moreover, Bratislava's percentage of founders who can imagine starting their company in the city stands at a notable 1%, indicating a positive perception of its startup environment. While its rank in popularity is relatively lower at 53, Bratislava has the potential to attract more entrepreneurs and investors in the coming years. In terms of scaling unicorns, it secured a rank of 74, indicating room for improvement in activating large-scale investments for growth. Although Utrecht's overall popularity among founders may not be high, with a rank of 75 and less than 1% of founders considering starting their company there, its ability to foster a conducive environment for entrepreneurial growth is undeniable. The city also demonstrates notable potential in Accelerating Startups, securing a rank of 54, and Scaling Unicorns, ranking at 46. These sub-categories highlight Utrecht's capabilities in helping startups enter the market and attracting large-scale investments for growth. With a rank of 18 in founder popularity among 200 analyzed startup hubs, Sofia has clearly gained the attention and interest of budding entrepreneurs. This is further supported by the fact that 3% of founders can imagine starting their companies in this vibrant city. While Sofia's performance in the sub-categories of 'Growing Entrepreneurs,' 'Accelerating Startups,' and 'Scaling Unicorns' are not as impressive, with rankings of 33, 60, and 38 respectively, there is still significant room for growth and development. The city's ecosystem for nurturing new founders may require further improvement, but the potential for growth and attracting large-scale investments is evident. Is e-residency a hot topic for our startups? Here's a quick recap of the latest event in Madrid. On Thursday, I attended an awesome e-residency event by the Republic of Estonia at one of six Madrid’s Impact Hub Madrid spaces. In a nutshell, over 100 startups applied for a 60-second pitch to Estonian VCs, but only 20 made it to the finals. Probably because they aimed to join the ranks of Estonian unicorns like Skype, Playtech, Bolt, and Pipedrive. 😄 After the pitch session, Agur Jõgi, CTO of Pipedrive, shared the perks of Estonia’s e-residency, and here are some key takeaways: ✅ Pioneering e-residency, opening doors to the global market. ✅ Enables you to manage your business online and access European markets. ✅ Full digital infrastructure that makes business management easier. ✅ Seamless operations with international payment providers and digital signatures. ℹ️ With over 111,700 e-residents and 29,800 companies, Estonia seems to offer a business-friendly environment that is perfect for testing, especially for DeepTech startups. And here is another data to keep in mind: Estonia is ranked 14th globally and 6th in the EU when it comes to the success of startup ecosystems (Startup Blink 2023). Running an event like Techstars Startup Week outside Lisbon or Porto is crucial for fostering innovation and entrepreneurship across Portugal. While these cities are known for their vibrant startup ecosystems, many smaller towns and regions are often overlooked, despite having immense potential. By bringing an event of this caliber to areas beyond the major hubs, we can create opportunities for local talent, provide access to valuable resources, and foster a sense of community among entrepreneurs who may otherwise lack support. This initiative helps decentralize innovation, spreading the entrepreneurial spirit to all corners of the country. This is something very close to my heart. I’ve personally seen how entrepreneurship can transform smaller communities, driving economic growth and creating jobs. In many cases, talented individuals outside Lisbon or Porto don’t have the same access to networks, mentors, and investors, which limits their potential. Bringing Techstars Startup Week to these regions ensures that local entrepreneurs don’t miss out on these critical opportunities.
