🔍 Assessing a portfolio of charge point locations The cornerstone of a successful electric vehicle (EV) charging business lies in the utilisation of chargers. Three major factors have a direct impact on charge point utilisation: 1. Location quality 🗺 When locations are assessed and evaluated, demand for electricity needs to be judged based on the customer’s (the EV driver’s) context or use case at the location. Do people want to go shopping or are they on a long-haul journey? Some locations can support several use cases. The density of EVs in a region, traffic volumes at each specific location, and proximity to points of interest like shopping, food, or leisure activities are key determinants. 2. Competition 🔌 Demand for EV charging is distributed among stations offering very similar charging capabilities and services. This means in theory, that the more chargers installed in an area, the lower the utilisation of each of them might be. However, as can be seen in practice, many chargers from various providers are attracting more traffic for all of them. Customers are learning quickly that the more chargers there are, the less likely they need to deal with malfunctions or wait time. Customer preferences and brand loyalty are playing a significant role in utilisation. 3. Operational excellence 🔧 Operational excellence is about doing things well, and about continuously improving them. ⚡ EV Fast Charging vs. Battery Swapping: A Race to power India's EV Market! ⚡ As India accelerates its shift toward electric vehicles, two tech solutions—EV fast charging and battery swapping—are vying for dominance. Each approach has unique strengths tailored to India's diverse needs. 🚗 Fast Charging Stations: Fast charging is ideal for personal EV owners who want convenience and reliability without worrying about battery compatibility. With charging infrastructure expanding, companies like Tata Power and Shell are building a widespread network of fast chargers across the country. However, while convenient, even fast charging still requires users to spend 30-45 minutes waiting (companies are working towards bringing this down to 10-15 mins), which may not be suitable for time-sensitive applications. 🔋 Battery Swapping: On the other hand, battery swapping, led by companies like Sun Mobility and startups like Lithion, offers near-instant energy replenishment—perfect for commercial fleets and high-use vehicles, especially in cities. It cuts downtime and minimizes the cost of EV ownership. Challenges remain, though, particularly around standardizing battery designs and the upfront infrastructure costs, which can be high for larger vehicles. India’s EV market, with its large share of two- and three-wheelers, is also steering the development of each solution. For instance, swapping is more common in smaller EVs, while charging stations are being prioritized for four-wheelers, with some use-case specific exceptions. The road ahead?
