🌟 Exciting News from INTERSPEECH 2024! 🌟 Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to present our research paper, "Bird Whisperer: Leveraging Large Pre-trained Acoustic Model for Bird Call Classification", at the INTERSPEECH 2024 Conference in Kos, Greece 🇬🇷. It was an amazing experience to share our work on adapting OpenAI’s Whisper model—originally developed for human speech recognition—to the unique challenge of classifying bird calls 🐦. Our approach achieved a remarkable ~15% improvement in F1-score over the baseline, showcasing the model’s potential in bioacoustic monitoring and conservation. These findings highlight the exciting possibilities of adapting pre-trained acoustic models for broader bioacoustic tasks, paving the way for future advancements in speech processing and ecological conservation. A special thank you to my supervisor and co-authors: Muhammad Umer Sheikh, Bhuiyan Sanjid Shafique, Asif Hanif, and Muhammad Haris Khan. This achievement wouldn't have been possible without their valuable contributions and collaboration! 🙌 For those interested in exploring the project further, you can check out the code and full implementation here: https://lnkd.in/dhhexTzH 🔗 #INTERSPEECH2024 #BirdWhisperer #Bioacoustics #AI #MachineLearning #WhisperModel #ConservationTech #AIForGood #DeepLearning

Researchers unveil an AI tool that tracks locations through microorganisms, revealing unprecedented potential for medicine, forensics, and disease control. https://lnkd.in/dXXtanRE Scientists have developed a groundbreaking AI tool that can track your location by analyzing microorganisms found on your body. This innovative method, known as Microbiome Geographic Population Structure (mGPS), creates a unique “fingerprint” of the microorganisms that vary depending on where you’ve been. Unlike GPS, which relies on satellites, this tool can identify whether you’ve visited a beach or a park by matching the microbiome samples to specific environments. The mGPS was highly accurate, successfully pinpointing locations for 92% of urban samples. This technology not only has potential applications in health and forensics but can also help trace the spread ... It’s already day two of the Advances in Marine Ecosystem Modelling Research (AMEMR) Symposium in Plymouth, UK, and climate change is center stage. Michal Grossowicz and Nitsan Avni are presenting how Gigablue applies multidisciplinary Ensemble Programming, expedited by AI, to optimize the efficacy of our marine carbon removal technology. Hats off to Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), University of Plymouth, and the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research for their curation of such a diverse yet focused agenda, bringing together top ecosystem stakeholders and the cutting-edge of science. Without extremely detailed and robustly validated modelling, deployment of carbon capture technologies would remain theoretical exercises. 🌊🌊🌊 #innovation #technology #greentech #data #AI #climatechange #marine #science

A dung beetle can move in a perfectly straight line with the help of light, wind, external and internal signals. How does it sort and weigh that information? Marie Dacke in Lund is exploring the beetle’s navigation system, potentially leading to better robotics and AI. “Dung beetles are highly mobile when they are rolling the ball – the terrain may be uneven, the sun may be obscured by clouds, woodland trees may block out the sky. Yet still they manage to steer a straight course. We want to understand how they receive and process signals with their eyes and their antennae – how they select information that is relevant and reliable, and process it,” says Wallenberg Schola Marie Dacke, professor of sensory biology at Lund University. https://lnkd.in/dVc5CVra #research #science #biology #robotics #AI #navigation Lund University Marie Dacke Lisa Kirsebom
