Studies suggest that women in design fields often emphasize user-centered spaces. Female architects may prioritize elements like safety, comfort, and functionality in designs, which can lead to spaces that feel intuitive and considerate of the end-users’ needs #WomanCrushWednesday #FemaleLed #NzuzaArchitects

As a man raised by generations of women before him, I’m quite appalled and disheartened by the gender biases that exist within architecture and interior design. One such example is the use of the label “woman architect”- a subtle, seemingly harmless, but pervasive form of sexism that exists, despite a 1:1 gender ratio in the architecture and interior design industry. A recent interaction on LinkedIn highlighted the deep-seated nature of this bias. An architect persistently referred to his female counterparts as "woman architects". When I brought it up, he got defensive and was unwilling to acknowledge the sexist, harmful undertones of his differentiation. This conversation, rather than an isolated incident, mirrors a broader resistance to recognizing and addressing gender biases within the profession. As professionals, I think it's time to question why we cling to these outdated labels and what they imply about our values and perceptions. The term "woman architect" is ridiculous in exactly the same way the term “man architect” sounds utterly preposterous. Let's open the floor to a more enlightened dialogue. Share your experiences on overcoming biases in architecture and interior design, in the comments section. As an Architect, I'm intrigued by how spaces are designed and primarily the functionality for the people who inhabit them. Believing strongly in creating people-centric environments, it's surprising to discover that much of our world isn't designed with 50% of the population in mind. Currently engrossed in 'Invisble Women' by Caroline Criado Perez (on Audible), I'm eager to share my learnings over the next week or so. Let's open a dialogue and hear what others think about designing spaces (and systems) that truly consider everyone. 🌐 Thanks Jordan Steel for the book recommendation! #Architecture #InclusiveDesign #PeopleCentricSpaces #InvisibleWomen

Throughout history, women architects – especially those from the Global South – have been underrepresented and overlooked. However, the very same adversities have also driven them to overcome hurdles with resolve and creativity, often resulting in innovative solutions and iconic buildings that are not only reframing narratives around culture and community, but are doing so through the unique perspectives and ambitions of their women designers, and in the process, are creating new opportunities for society at large. Spotlighting 100 women architects from around the world, a new book by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) – titled 100 Women: Architects in Practice – celebrates the contribution of these talents and hopes to create greater dialogue on the gender imbalance in architecture. (Also read: These Middle Eastern Women Artists Are Ones To Watch) From the 100 featured designers, AD spotlights 11 women in architecture from the Global South who are changing the world. https://lnkd.in/gbiUXyDA

🔍 Exploring Anti-Sleeping Designs in Public Spaces: A Double-Edged Sword? 🛋️🚫 In urban planning and design, the discussion around anti-sleeping designs in public spaces is gaining momentum. These subtle yet impactful measures, such as slanted benches and armrests, aim to discourage resting or sleeping in communal areas. Considerations include: 🔹 **Intended Use vs. Universal Accessibility:** Should public spaces prioritize one group's comfort over the basic needs of others? 🔹 **Balancing Design and Compassion:** Urban professionals grapple with creating functional, appealing spaces while ensuring inclusivity, particularly for vulnerable populations like the homeless. 🔹 **Long-Term Implications:** While anti-sleeping designs address immediate issues, they may not tackle root causes. Could these measures inadvertently push marginalized individuals to more precarious locations? #UrbanDesign #PublicSpace #Inclusivity #Architecture #SocialResponsibility

Ready for episode 3 of #QueerForCities? Well, it’s out now!! Join me for a dynamic dive into the intersections of queer identity, urban planning, and public space with special guest Aaron Greiner (CultureHouse). Aaron is an innovative urban designer dedicated to crafting more inclusive cities, and he's here to share his insights on how queer urbanism benefits everyone. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/e7i5pd-z Audiogram Description: The image features a photo of Aaron Greiner standing against a vibrant graffiti background. Dynamic captions overlay the image, displaying his quote: "The beautiful and the challenging about cities is that they are human constructions. When you look at most places that we spend our time, a person decided to design them that way... A queer approach to urbanism inherently centers identity, it breaks norms, and it gives people the ability to adapt their space." The graffiti backdrop adds an urban and artistic feel to the audiogram, emphasizing the theme of urban design and queer urbanism. #queerurbanism #urbandesign #urbanplanning #placemaking
