Exploring the Old Streets of Ahmedabad: A Study in Urban Design As part of our group project, we explored Old Ahmedabad, analyzing key urban design principles—Visual Aesthetics, Ergonomics, Enclosure, Permeability, Proximity, Circulation & Movement, and Scale & Proportion—through real-world observations. From the visual charm of heritage facades to the ergonomic design of street seating, we saw how urban elements shape daily life. The enclosure of narrow lanes, permeability of doorways, and proximity of mixed-use spaces all contribute to a dynamic, walkable environment. Observing circulation and movement, we studied how people and vehicles interact in these organic streets, while scale and proportion reinforced the intimate character of the city. This project deepened our appreciation for human-centric urban design and the timeless wisdom embedded in historic cities. This compact 1BHK residence embodies a minimalist philosophy, seamlessly integrating with its natural surroundings. 1. Earthy Harmony: The color palette embraces a range of earthy tones, echoing the organic beauty of the landscape. This mindful selection fosters a sense of tranquility and connection with the outdoors. 2. Minimalist Masterclass: Clean lines and a focus on essential elements define the design language. This approach optimizes space utilization and creates a sense of uncluttered serenity. 3. Residential Architecture @ Jaipur Courtyard House, Jaipur The courtyard house was an exploration to evolve architectural form as a response to the strong context addressing parameters such as climate, amalgamation of local building materials, construction techniques and craftsmanship creating a building which is a reflection of the lifestyle for the residents. The wind movement guides the proportions of the courtyard enabling the spaces to be naturally ventilated and lit throughout the year. Deep colonnaded external verandahs in this semi-arid climatic zone while prevents the excessive heat to directly penetrate into the façade during summers also responds to winters where it is utilized more for outdoor seating. On the other hand, the internal courtyard which reaches deep into the house, blurring the boundary between inside and outside, is an ideal summer gathering space. Designed for a traditional Indian, close-knit joint family that loves spending time with each other, the emphasis is to ensure a variety of semi-open and enclosed common spaces that encourage a sense of togetherness and community spaces that holds a large family together - celebration of 03 generations living together. House XO in Kerala, designed by 3dor Concepts, brilliantly showcases the integration of industrial design with the natural beauty of its surroundings. The home's striking exposed steel frame not only creates an inviting atmosphere but also reflects the owner's background in the steel industry. This approach to architectural design raises questions about the intersection of materiality and aesthetics in modern homes. Reflecting on my journey in architecture, I find that creating spaces that foster a connection with nature, similar to House XO, is essential. This project effectively uses large glass windows and an open layout to invite the outdoors in, allowing residents to feel like they are living harmoniously within their environment. #Chai_chat 13 Designing a home is more than just a project! It is being part of a very emotional and an exciting journey of the clients.. Unlike many other typologies, a home is a destination-space for the end users and not a transiting one. This makes it that much more tricky to incorporate all the small and yet significant needs and wants the client would want! A home is also one typology where the age of the client is immaterial. A home should be as welcoming and warm to an infant as to a senior citizen!
