Deep Sea Mining ⚓ is having a bit of a moment. Between sudden regulatory attention (https://loom.ly/XPqUO04), promising technical innovations (https://loom.ly/uJ0ICHg), resource discoveries (https://loom.ly/U-64Gzo), and evolving environmental science (https://loom.ly/iORxfT4), the landscape (seascape?) is constantly shifting. How are you preparing for the Mining Industry's eventual plunge into the depths? As capital flows move, are you going to lead, follow, or get out of the way?

A recent paper by Deloitte asks whether it is it time to revive the UK mining sector. Transitioning to a low-carbon economy needs UK energy infrastructure to be rebuilt and rewired. This will require large volumes of critical minerals, many of which are mined and refined in countries with complex supply chains. Last year, the UK government set out its critical minerals strategy to strengthen supply chain resilience of critical minerals. #Exploration for coal often involves understanding the dip of coal cores. This refers to the angle at which coal seams or layers are inclined from the horizontal plane. It's crucial in determining the feasibility of mining operations and the potential yield of coal deposits. Geologists use core samples to analyze this dip, helping to plan extraction methods and assess the economic viability of mining projects.

The ocean floor is filled with trillions of deposits of rare earth elements including lithium, cobalt, copper, nickel, aluminium, manganese and zinc. Engineers are devising ways to mine them at depths from 200-6000 m below the surface. Commercial deep-sea mining is not expected to begin until 2026, with the International Seabed Authority, which regulates activities in the seabed beyond national jurisdictions, so far issuing 31 exploration permits to 22 contractors. Closer to home, though, the practice is largely off-limits so far in Australia.
