LEAVE THE LEAVES ALONE Leave the leaves wherever you can! Everything green in our landscape took water to grow. Removing leaf and needle shed robs our environment of vital moisture, nutrient rich topsoil, and critical habitat as for me, I mow/mulch the leaves directly back into the lawn and leave the leaves as permanent mulch in my garden beds and surrounding landscape areas. It builds topsoil, smothers weeds and encourages earthworms, beneficial insects like fireflies, ladybugs, butterflies and moths. You know your own yard best, but there are likely at least 1-2 places you can do this...give it a try #leavetheleaves.

You share a backyard fence with an incredibly annoying neighbor. You’d love to plant something that would grow quickly, is tall, and would completely block any view of each others back yards. Is that a death wish?😀 It's a definite maybe. Bamboo can be a beautiful plant in your yard, easy to grow and maintain. BUT bamboo can also be an agressive, hard to control invasive weed. Think before you plant. It spreads with a vengeance and can easily take over your neighbor’s yard. Bamboo gets tall. It gets bushy. It spreads all over your yard and every neighboring yard. It becomes a bamboo forest. It grows so fast you could watch its progress over the course of the day. Whenever anyone says they want to plant bamboo, this is what I tell them. It will take over your life, and your neighbors’ lives. If I haven't convinced you yet, check your local laws for invasive species. If it creeps off your property you can be fined and are responsible for containing/maintaining it within your property boundary. Choose wisely and consider alternative options that are less aggressive but still effective in creating a peaceful backyard. #garden #bamboo

Since tree straps do not expand as the tree grows, it is possible for tree straps to begin choking the tree, hindering the flow of nutrients. The easiest way to check if your tree is at risk, is to see if the tree has begun to grow around the tree straps. This job starts this week. Leaf litter is full of good things for your garden. Did you know… lightning bug larvae, also known as firefly larvae, live in leaf litter: 🍁Fireflies spend most of their lives as larvae in leaf litter, under rotting logs, and in moist areas. 🍁Larvae eat soft-bodied insects like slugs, snails, and mosquitoes. 🍁Fireflies are beneficial to gardens because they eat pests. 🍁The leaf layer protects larvae from the elements and provides a moist environment. 🍁The leaves keep larvae warm and hidden while they hibernate. 🍁The leaves also provide a habitat for other beneficial insects, such as beetles, spiders, moths, and butterflies. 🍁To encourage fireflies, you can: leave leaves in your garden to decompose We have collected/rescued thousands of bags of leaves for decades from curbside heading to the landfill. They have helped to restore the natural order on our flower farm. #gardenersworkshopfarm
