Dr. Attilio Arcari, Dr. Derek Horton, Dr. Edward Lemieux, Dr. James Martin: NAVSEA COLUMBIA Class Shaft Life Risk Assessment for Exceptional Scientific and Engineering Achievement Team Award: For outstanding contributions to an extensive analysis of the COLUMBIA Class shaft design. The COLUMBIA Class Shaft Life Risk Assessment Team quantified the risk to meet the twelve-year shaft life requirements critical to the Navy’s number 1 Acquisition Priority. The team’s work allows the Navy to meet operational and materiel availability key performance parameters, and implemented improvements to shaft life design that can be adopted by other submarine classes in the Fleet. The assessments of the team quantified the risk of shaft crack initiation and propagation of the COLUMBIA Class shaft, recommended the number of spare shafts required to support the class life cycle, and provided the COLUMBIA Class Program Office the confidence to retire the risk of shaft failure over the required service life. This ensures the COLUMBIA Class Ballistic Missile Submarine (SSBN) will be able to meet the nation’s strategic deterrence needs. 🌐 Inspiring Testimonial from Chairman Raul Fangueiro 🌐 It is with immense pride that we share the testimony of Raul Fangueiro, Chairman of AuxDefense Conference, Full Professor in Advanced Fibrous and Composite Materials, Vice-Dean of the School of Engineering at the Universidade do Minho, and President of Fibrenamics. Raul Fangueiro highlights the fact that AuxDefense is the leading conference on #advanced #materials for #defense applications. In the 3rd edition, we had more than 150 participants from 35 different countries. We had the presence of military institutes, universities, research centers, companies, and presentations with a high scientific level. Ballistic protections, Explosions, CBRN Protections, Auxetic Materials, Smart Materials, and Smart Textiles were some of the topics discussed. Don't miss the opportunity to participate in the 4th edition of AuxDefense which promises to be the meeting point for everyone interested in advanced materials. 👉 https://bit.ly/3I9cEIw #AuxDefense2024 #AdvancedMaterials #DefenseInnovation #ScientificAdvancements #Technology #Conference #Braga #BeyondBoundaries #Air #Sea #Land #Space #DefenseTech #BallisticProtections #AuxeticMaterials #SmartMaterials #SmartTextiles

❕ New paper alert! ❗ Today I had the opportunity to present my research paper 📜 , A Bayesian Network Approach to Hybrid Threat Modelling to the International Conference on Military Communication and Information Systems (ICMCIS) as part of NATO Science & Technology Organization (STO). 👨💻 As hybrid threats are gaining prominence in modern conflicts, insights into the effectiveness of counter-hybrid measures are increasingly relevant. Using empirical simulations, our modelling effort sheds light on the effectiveness of various measures in the context of a cyber-attack on critical infrastructure. 💡 Please find a preprint of our paper at https://lnkd.in/e5hQ5MbJ. The AIAA Defense Forum remains a strategic event for ATA Engineering. This week we will be attending the forum’s plenary sessions and presenting research outcomes in the technical sessions at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland. As a key technical partner to our defense industry clients, it is critical to participate in the conversations surrounding needed innovations to aid our customers’ development of advanced products that deliver excellent performance and reliability to the warfighter. ATA is eager to collaborate with our engineering counterparts at this year’s forum to accelerate the development of these solutions, ensuring success in the implementation of vital defense strategies. It's been a minute since my years ('84-'88) at Ohio University, spending time in the Edwards Accelerator Lab, housing a tandem Van de Graaff accelerator - used to accelerate atomic particles to energies up to 9 MeV (14% of the speed of light) via a large dome charged to high voltage by a moving chain. Pushing the thresholds of modern science and technical innovation forward is so important, along with developing and inspiring our next generation of physicists, mathematicians, and other scientists. DARPA’s Defense Sciences Office (DSO) is hosting an in-person Discover DSO Day (D3) on Oct. 3-4, 2024, in Boston, Massachusetts. The goals of the two-day gathering are to: Highlight DSO science and technology focus areas for future exploration and potential DARPA investment Facilitate conversations between DARPA DSO program managers and members of the broader science and technology ecosystem Provide insights and tips on how to work with DARPA DSO DSO’s mission to is to identify and pursue high-impact research initiatives across a broad spectrum of science and engineering disciplines for the Department of Defense. DSO focuses on nascent and emergent technologies that may result in breakthrough capabilities for U.S. national security applications and seeks to demonstrate the potential of these technologies through targeted development efforts. “Building on our successful Discover DSO Day event held in San Francisco earlier this year, we’re hosting this event in Boston to engage the East Coast scientific community,” said DSO Director Dr. Jinendra Ranka. “In addition to keynote speakers and expert panel discussions on future tech trends, we’re providing more opportunity for DSO program managers to share their visions for potential future program ideas and for participants to speak directly with program managers.” Before the start of each panel session, DSO program managers will describe their ideas for propelling tech forward in the following key areas: -Quantum Science -Sensing and measurement -High-energy physics -Novel materials and structures -Cognition, computation, and processing -Enabling technologies for defense operations #science #Physics #OhioUniversity #DARPA #math #technology Scylla Crisis Response Leader Training EAGL TECHNOLOGY, INC Albert Stepanyan Joint Special Operations University Joint Munitions Command Alan Pugh Sandia National Laboratories Kris Greiner Air Force Research Laboratory Davista Chris Grollnek Chris Willoughby NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Bluegrass Army Depot Daniel Zilinski, PMP, CISA Gary Connor Louis Barani Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory https://lnkd.in/dCiPMPSa

The goal of "Joint Activity Testing to Evaluate Operational Readiness of Space Domain Awareness (SDA) Human-Machine Teaming (HMT)" is to increase the United States Space Force capacity for understanding the costs and benefits of plausible HMT strategies by studying human-machine training for SDA in #cislunar environments and adapting and improving joint activity testing for SDA. Michael Rayo, Associate Professor of Integrated Systems Engineering at The Ohio State University College of Engineering is the PI on this project. Lorraine Borghetti, Research Lead of the Human-Machine Co-learning Team, is the Air Force Research Laboratory co-PI for this project. #spacedomainawareness | #defense | #innovation
