Ruth Davis is the UK’s first ever Special Representative for Nature. In this role she will engage with countries and policy makers across the world making the case for investing in nature to protect our precious forests, oceans, and wildlife. The United Nations Climate Change Conference, commonly known as COP29, is currently taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, where the Special Representative is supporting the UK political team to deliver a successful outcome. Here she shares her reflections on the role the UK government has played at COP29 and why we need to put nature at the heart of our discussions on climate change. #COP29 #NatureRecovery

As the Nature COP kicks off in Colombia, it’s crucial that we focus on key outcomes: reforming subsidies, mobilizing effective finance, and ensuring robust measurement and monitoring of nature. If we’ve learned anything from tackling #climate and #carbon, it’s that clear definitions, strong metrics, transparency, and accountability are essential for success. Our future depends on nature, and it’s time to adopt integrated solutions that address both climate and nature challenges together. #NatureCOP #COP16 #Sustainability #ClimateAction

Today, on Earth Day and International Mother Earth Day, I am pleased to share my editorial published in The National News, where I discuss the pivotal outcomes of COP28 and our collective journey towards a more sustainable future. COP28 set new benchmarks in integrating nature within our climate strategy. We secured a global commitment to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030 and mobilized significant financial support, totaling $2.7 billion for nature-focused initiatives. These steps underscore our dedication to protecting crucial ecosystems around the world. This year’s summit also celebrated the indispensable contributions of Indigenous communities, whose deep-rooted knowledge and practices are key to advancing our climate goals. From the Mangrove Alliance for climate to innovative seagrass conservation efforts, we are taking strides to protect and restore vital habitats that not only sequester carbon but also shield biodiversity and support local communities. As we look towards significant UN meetings this year, the editorial in The National calls for continued momentum and collaboration. It’s a moment to reflect on our progress and the essential actions needed to forge a resilient and sustainable path forward. Let us all stay committed to this cause and ensure that the spirit of Earth Day and International Mother Earth Day is reflected in our actions every day. Please read and share the full editorial to join in this crucial dialogue. Inspiring words from IUCN's President on #EarthDay - "The realisation that #naturebasedsolutions can contribute significantly to climate mitigation and adaptation is a paradigm shift, emphasising the need for a holistic approach to environmental and climate policies. This approach is not just about reducing emissions; it is about creating sustainable interaction between humans and the natural world, where each action in favour of #nature is also a step towards climate resilience and sustainability."

As the COP28 climate summit concludes in Dubai, I am inspired by the collective efforts of governments, businesses, civil society and individuals to protect and restore our natural ecosystems. The United for Nature initiative, launched at COP28, is a global partnership that aims to mobilize action and resources to conserve and restore forests, mangroves, land and ocean. These ecosystems are not only vital for biodiversity, but also for mitigating climate change, enhancing food security, and improving human well-being. The initiative has already secured commitments from over 100 countries and 200 organizations to conserve and restore more than 1 billion hectares of land and ocean by 2030. #UnitedforNature #COP28 #EcosystemRestoration

I’m glad to see the impact of my latest article in influencing the global climate agenda by launching the #RioTrio #Initiative. Couple of days ago, the #COP29 Presidency officially launched the Rio Trio Initiative, drawing on key ideas I explored in my article “A Year for the Environment.” This initiative represents a major step forward in aligning global efforts to address pressing environmental challenges. I am pleased to see the ideas from my article reflected in the ambitions of this initiative, which highlights the urgent need for coordinated global action to address the interconnected environmental issues we face. This collaboration serves as a powerful reminder that effectively tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, and desertification requires a unified approach. The Rio Trio Initiative offers a vital platform to turn this vision into reality. Link to my article: https://lnkd.in/dJfjMCUe Link to COP29’s RioTrio: https://lnkd.in/dcn8giES

Are nature-based solutions the key to building a sustainable future? With COP16 Colombia fast-approaching, the need to incorporate nature-based solutions (NbS) into global strategies to combat biodiversity loss and climate change is greater than ever. From 21 October to 1 November, Cali, Colombia will play host to policymakers, scientists, and leaders from the business and finance sectors for the increasingly high-profile ‘biodiversity COP’. Building on the landmark COP15 – when a pledge was made to protect 30% of land and oceans by 2030 – COP16 is set to focus on the progress made, and to explore how investments in NbS can drive the transition to an economy that works in harmony with nature. Current annual investments in NbS are less than USD 200 billion annually. According to Marc Palahí, Chief Nature Officer at Lombard Odier Investment Managers (LOIM), and Laura García Vélez, Nature Specialist at LOIM, this figure must quadruple by 2050 if we are to meet our climate and biodiversity goals. It's almost time for #COP29. The top priority at this ‘finance COP’ is establishing a new global goal for climate finance to replace the previous $100 billion target. Developing nations are calling for a new goal of US$1 trillion per year. Significant disagreements are expected, but it is crucial that the new goal aligns with the Paris Agreement and explicitly supports nature as a key ally in combating climate change. I'm heading to Baku with Georgia Crump to support the Nature4Climate Coalition and the international media reporting on COP29 with announcements, stories and interviews. What are we calling on leaders to deliver? 1️⃣ Triple finance for nature by 2030 to meet climate and biodiversity goals. 2️⃣ Create ambitious and investable Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to mobilize private sector capital into nature-based solutions. 3️⃣ Harmonize and align plans, policies, and budgets across the Rio Conventions ahead of COP30 to ensure cohesive action.
