NSF announced the addition of three new NSF Innovation Corps (NSF I-Corps™) Hubs — each funded up to $3 million per year for the next five years. The investment will provide experiential entrepreneurial training to researchers across all fields of science and engineering, accelerating the translation of discoveries into new solutions that benefit society and the economy. Each of the new NSF I-Corps Hubs comprises a regional alliance of at least eight universities. The teams are led by the University of California, Berkeley, Georgia Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, respectively. "The goal of the I-Corps program is to deploy experiential education to help researchers reduce the time necessary to translate promising ideas from laboratory benches to widespread implementation that in turn impacts economic growth regionally and nationally," said Erwin Gianchandani, assistant director for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships. "Each regional NSF I-Corps Hub provides training essential in entrepreneurship and customer discovery, leading to new products, startups and jobs. Calling Alberta’s #deeptech entrepreneurs!   Our partners at Innovate Calgary are working to support #STEM graduates in commercializing innovative science-based technologies: The Innovation Catalyst Grant (ICG) is an entrepreneurial fellowship that supports recent Master’s or PhD graduates in STEM disciplines. Sponsored by the Government of Alberta, and managed locally by Innovate Calgary, this program provides a 2-year runway for entrepreneurs to develop and commercialize innovative science-based products and services that contain a hardware component   It is often difficult to bridge the gap between low-TRL technologies, successful commercialization and meaningful follow-on investment. 💡 Broadening horizons with scientific research findings Our colleague Selina Lehmann attended a research seminar at the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Research (ENI) of the Universität Stuttgart The topic of this seminar was all about #collaborating with startups including #challenges and best practices. Juliane Möllmann, PhD Student at the Aarhus University in Denmark, presented her findings from dissertation projects on corporate-startup collaboration. In particular, we took away the following three key learnings: 👉 #Open #innovation contests with startups are a powerful tool for finding solutions. 👉 Problem framing is key – too broad or too narrow can compromise results. 👉 Know your #stakeholders involved in the process and their interest. “We regularly incorporate research findings into our work to optimize our internal processes. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend Purdue University’s Faculty Innovation & Entrepreneurship (I&E) Ecosystem event, where research truly transforms into real-world impact. As an urban soil scientist and founder of House of Soil LLC, this was a fantastic opportunity to see how innovation can drive sustainable change, and it left me feeling inspired and ready to take action! The event showcased how Purdue Innovates has built to support faculty innovators. Here’s a glimpse into some of the amazing resources available: - I&E Ambassadors and I&E Fellows who are leading collaboration across departments and colleges, fostering a culture of innovation at Purdue. - The NSF I-Corps team, which helps researchers translate their work into market-ready solutions—bridging the gap between discovery and commercialization. - Purdue Innovates’ Office of Technology Commercialization, where cutting-edge inventions are protected and licensed to industry, turning ideas into commercial success. - The Incubator, which supports Purdue-connected startups with programming and mentorship to accelerate their growth. - Strategic Ventures, providing investment and connections for venture-scale startups to thrive in the innovation community. On top of that, the Entrepreneurial Storytellers were an absolute highlight—hearing from relatable professionals who shared their real-life experiences of taking research from the lab to market, while balancing personal and professional life. I left with new ideas, connections, and a renewed sense of how innovation can drive change - especially in the realms of sustainability and soil health.
