Celebrating the Birth of AI: The Dartmouth Conference of 1956 Recently, our team at Matogen Applied Insights had an engaging discussion about the origins of Artificial Intelligence, particularly focusing on the Dartmouth Conference of 1956. This event, which brought together visionaries scientists at Dartmouth College, marked a pivotal moment in the history of AI. In the summer of 1956, these scientists gathered for a project that would forever change the world – the Dartmouth Conference. This groundbreaking event, conceived by John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, Claude Shannon, and others, laid the foundation for the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). We believe this makes for an intriguing origin story that highlights the pioneering spirit and innovative thinking that continues to drive our work today. What's the future of AI for science? I think we should build a "science exocortex" that expands each researcher's cognition beyond their brain. Imagine a swarm of AI agents operating on behalf of a scientist. The AIs communicate with each other, and work on problems semi-autonomously; they surface the most high-value ideas and decisions for the human to consider. If implemented correctly, this agentic AI ecosystem would feel to the researcher like an expansion of their brain-power. This is admittedly speculative. I posted a preprint with details about how this might work: https://lnkd.in/e8Yfn2mS I view this as a community-wide activity. We should be working together to build AI agents for various tasks, and figuring out how to connect them to each other to build a useful swarm. The next few years should be quite exciting!
