Our paper entitled "Maximizing Entanglement Rates via Efficient Memory Management in Flexible Quantum Switches" has been published in the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, in the special issue "The Quantum Internet: Principles, Protocols, and Architectures." In this work we study how a quantum switch (i.e., quantum repeater that interconnects multiple nodes) can enhance its capacity by dynamically reallocating quantum memory in response to network needs. To this end, • We characterize the set of arrival rate of requests for end-to-end entanglements for which there exists a scheduling policy that stabilizes the switch. • We study how the capacity depends on the number of quantum memories and the probability of successful Link Level Entanglements (e.g. by increasing the quality of the quantum hardware used). This analysis is necessary when designing a quantum switch (e.g. we know the traffic the switch needs to satisfy and we have to decide upon how many quantum memory registers the switch has to possess). • We propose a memory allocation policy (MEW) that stabilizes the switch when (i) the LLEs last one time slot and (ii) the arrivals of requests are in the interior of the capacity region. What Metrics Are Important When Evaluating a Quantum Processor’s Performance? 👉 Fidelity: a critical metric for evaluating the reliability and accuracy of quantum computations 👉 Computation speed: to compensate for low coherence time, gate operations should occur fast enough to make complex computations 👉 Multiqubit networking: the more qubits can be linked to one another to perform gate operations, the more readily they can implement quantum computing algorithms 👉 Control over individual qubits at scale: Control over the performance of individual qubits becomes increasingly complex at scale 👉 Cooling and environmental Control: for most qubit technologies, the required cooling equipment needs to scale in terms of both size and power 👉 Manufacturing: some qubit designs use existing production technology, while others require new manufacturing techniques And most importantly: End-users of quantum computers only care about what solves their industry problems in a commercially viable way That’s why quantum hardware manufacturers should focus not only on fundamental metrics but also on what is relevant to solving practical problems and individual use cases Learn more about evaluating quantum processors from our interview with Himadri Majumdar from SemiQon: https://lnkd.in/ePVQ_CpN

Want to understand more about the status of quantum computing? My friends at Riverlane just published The Quantum Error Correction Report 2024. Quantum error correction (QEC) is necessary for meaningfull quantum computing. Riverlane is the technology leader in QEC. This report is a comprehencive review of the state-of-the-art and it gives context within the challenges of quantum computing.

The reliable provision of #entangled #qubits is an essential precondition in a variety of schemes for distributed quantum computing. This is challenged by multiple nuisances, such as errors during the transmission over quantum links, but also due to degradation of the entanglement over time due to decoherence. The latter can be seen as a constraint on the latency of the quantum protocol, which brings the problem of quantum protocol design into the context of latency-reliability constraints. The authors address the problem through hybrid schemes that combine: (1) indirect transmission based on teleportation and distillation; (2) direct transmission, based on #QEC.
