It is Understood that a Helicopter will or should take off and land vertically, but most importantly it must hover. A rocket can do VTOL, but hover, it cant. A Harrier is an Aeroplane that can do VTOL and hover, but is not a helicopter. It depends on how gravity is overcome. Either by a wing producing a component of force normal to the wind axis, called lift as it cuts through the air, or by rotating the Wing and producing a force. And a rocket … brute force. TurboProp, turboshaft, turbojet, turbo fan, inline, DOHC, radial, electric are all modes of power generation, allowing thermal, mechanical, chemical, electrical energy to be converted to lift. Right now, the ‘e’ is fashionable, as its new and different. Fast forward 35 years, the energy density of batteries will approach that of hydrocarbon fuel 44-46MJ/kg, assuming 10% improvement in storage technology every year. So in 2060, since everything will be electric, the term eVTOL will look silly.. the VTOL is dictated by flight physics not by propulsion technology. And for eCTOL.. well there are two ‘e’ in the word aeroplane , if you really are hung up on ‘E’ then i suggest Elicopter, and or AeroplanE can be used. Just a thought.
