As a participant in the domain-expert workshops for the EU Harmonized Waste Sorting Labeling Project, I am particularly eager to learn more about the feedback gathered during the citizen workshops, as summarized in the linked article. I fully support the two key statements below, which advocate for a clear and simple implementation of the system for bins and packaging, combined with a complementary digital layer. This dual approach ensures accessible, straightforward use while enabling detailed and comprehensive information delivery for those who request it, and can also facilitate earlier implementation! Czechia: "... keeping the system as simple as possible. At the same time, it should be supported by a single information platform with all details that can help in situations when recycling is unclear, such as how to correctly separate materials and how to handle dirty packaging. They stressed the importance of communicating and educating citizens adequately." Estonia: "They valued the approach to simplify sorting and discussed how to ensure inclusivity with added features for accessibility and digital guidance."

The final part of 💧 Mikkeli Water Week (MWW) 💧 took us to EcoSairila – the heart of innovation in environmental business. This visit was organized by the Blue Economy Mikkeli (BEM) Cluster, a dynamic network that unites companies, research institutes, and financiers in the water sector to foster collaboration and drive international growth. ♻ 💧 EcoSairila is where success is built from the ground up, offering companies the perfect ecosystem to innovate and thrive. With resources like reclaimed water, state-of-the-art RDI infrastructure, and environmental data platforms, it’s a place where groundbreaking solutions are developed. Whether through development projects or alongside production activities, EcoSairila offers unmatched support for businesses in circular economy, waste management, and water technology. 💦 BEM plays a pivotal role in this by bringing together a powerful network. Companies in the water sector benefit from access to cutting-edge facilities like the MBR water treatment plant and biogas plant, alongside the expertise of Ruralia Institute - University of Helsinki, LUT University and Xamk - South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences. The result? A vibrant platform for piloting, testing, and international collaboration in a real-world water plant environment. It’s exciting to see new companies joining the BEM Cluster – even from Estonia! Together, we are united in one goal: to make Mikkelin kaupunki - City of Mikkeli the global capital of clean water. Did you know they handle more than 70% of the total volume of materials traded? They are key in transitioning towards a circular economy with more sustainable value chains. Our latest project showcases how excess materials in port regions can be transformed into opportunities. Focusing on three North Sea ports—Skagen Havn - Port of Skagen , Eigersund Næring og Havn KF, and Port of Zwolle | Port of Opportunities —we've applied advanced Material Flow Analysis to repurpose what was once considered 'waste' into valuable resources for sustainable reuse. This initiative is part of the European REDII Ports project, in collaboration with Noordelijk Innovatielab Circulaire Economie | NICE and VIVES Research (University of Applied Sciences). We are pioneering the application of circular principles, from recycling construction debris to reusing food waste.
