Being Present Is One Way To Help Dying Friend Dear Doctors: My friend was diagnosed with multiple myeloma 10 years ago. His chemo is no longer working, and his doctors say there’s nothing else to be done. He has accepted whatever is coming. He has lost weight, and sometimes the pain is bad. How can I help him? Dear Reader: No matter how long someone has been dealing with a serious illness, the cessation of active treatment can be devastating. This is true not only for the person approaching the end of their life, but also for family and friends. The response to this transition often includes a rotating mix of grief, sorrow, fear, anxiety, dread and anger. However, people also often feel acceptance, peace, hope and even relief. Again, these are experienced not only by the individual who is ill, but also by the people around them. When spending time with someone with a terminal illness, you are looking for balance. That is, you want to be supportive and helpful, but not overwhelm them with your attentions. Hospice care professionals say this can be achieved by asking the person what they need. ... Always check with the person before starting a new task or a project. This keeps them in control of the events around them, which bolsters mental and emotional well-being. Therapistdiaries The smile on the face, but puffed up face and dark circles and sunken eyes that can't be hidden even after putting up make up! What do you think it reflects?? Well, it reflects phases of emotional turbulence that probably many of us psychiatrist, Psychotherapist go through in silence!! Balancing the emotional weight of our professional life with the demands of personal life, especially during times of celebration, is incredibly challenging. On one side, there's the need to grieve and honor the struggles of the clients , their pain, grief that we are trying to help and heal and clients that we've lost, particularly when that loss feels so raw. As therapists, we’re naturally inclined to hold space for that sorrow, for the helplessness we often feel in the face of irreversible pain. Yet, at the same time, we’re expected to shift gears—to smile, to be present for our family, to create joy for our children, and fully engage in the preparations for an upcoming celebration. It feels like being pulled in two directions. One part of us is grieving, seeking the space to sit with that grief, while another part needs to be resilient, joyful, and emotionally available for our loved ones. This delicate balance, though tough, is something we must navigate. I've come to realize over years that both sides of this equation are valid and need attention. Finding a way to honor the grief privately, even in brief moments, allows us to process it before stepping into the roles our family requires. It's not about denying one for the other, but about allowing both to coexist. This balance, though delicate and difficult can be slowly achieved!

Ever since I lost my sister to suicide, the grief has been deep, it has been consistently there and it’s been something I’m learning to live with. I’ll be going about my day, feeling good about it, doing the things I need to…and all of a sudden, it’ll be this wave that hits me of her memory, and I’ll stop in my tracks realizing that I’ll never see her again, how is that even real? But it is. And life goes on. There are many in this world that have loved and lost, and each person grieves for their loved one in their own way, whether it’s an illness or an accident. To lose a loved one to suicide though is seemingly different, I’m not saying it’s more or less or above or below, I’m just using the word different. You know, when the coroner’s report says “intentional” in black and white, you question in your mind over and over, why did you do this intentionally? But here’s what I have come to know, it was not intentional at all….because I know she intended to LIVE, she intended to THRIVE….but WITHOUT the mental pain, without the psychological turmoil. She had every intention to want to get better because she knew how much she was loved and how much she loved the life she created. So no, it was not intentional, when the mind knows no other way to end the pain, then ending one’s life seems to be the only way. I’ll end by saying this, be intentional in asking the question about suicidal thoughts, listening and understanding what it means when it is spoken by someone you love. Know that it’s a clinical problem that needs immediate attention, diagnosis and treatment, the earlier this can be done, the more lives we will save. I miss you sis. I’ll never stop doing what I’m doing in your honor and memory. I’ll never let your legacy die. 💙🙏🏽❤️🩹🐘 #suicideprevention #mentalhealthawareness
