This HBR article explores the growing criticisms surrounding ESG, from concerns about greenwashing to debates over the role of businesses in addressing societal issues like climate change. As ESG faces scrutiny from all sides, this piece challenges leaders to rethink how they balance corporate responsibility with profit, sparking much-needed debate on the future of sustainability and government regulation. Traditional capitalism has proven effective for economic growth but has repeatedly failed to instill responsible behavior, leading to negative externalities—most notably climate change (also caused by other factors)—that society can no longer ignore. Today, people value governance, care and sustainability (economic, environmental, and social) in businesses more than ever. When these areas aren't adequately addressed, companies face increasing regulatory and reputational risks, as well as physical risks. Despite risk being a primary driver currently for ESG practices in many businesses, I hope that we unite as a society to ensure real impact and that with time, ESG evolves beyond being a compliance checkbox, becoming a tool for innovation and long-term value creation for both shareholders and society. A compelling read for anyone interested in the future of corporate responsibility and navigating the complexities of ESG in today's polarized political landscape and 'culture wars'.

The role of U.S. public boards in managing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues has significantly evolved over the past five years. Initially, boards were largely unprepared to handle materially financial ESG topics, lacking the necessary background and credentials. However, recent developments show a positive shift, with the percentage of Fortune 100 board members possessing relevant ESG credentials rising from 29% to 43%. This increase is primarily in environmental and governance credentials, while social credentials have seen less growth. https://lnkd.in/grNuqDPr

🎵 "𝑁𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ", known from 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐺𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑆ℎ𝑜𝑤𝑚𝑎𝑛, perfectly captures the dramaturgical reality many ESG managers and C-level executives feel when tackling the 𝐄𝐒𝐆-𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 of #CSDDD, #CSRD, and #EUTaxonomy.   The challenge has been acknowledged: Ursula von der Leyen emphasized in early November (https://lnkd.in/dgDq9r7V) that the bureaucratic burden of this triangle should be reduced.   🔄 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭? Absolutely not! She also made it clear that the content of the regulations is seen as good, and the ESG-triangle will remain. What is set to change is the implementation path: greater coherence, fewer overlaps, and reduced redundancies.   🚀 𝐀𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐦!  🐦 Companies need to stay on track and approach the challenges of ESG management and reporting with a clear, structured plan.   📋 An 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐄𝐒𝐆 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐩 that consolidates these aspects is the way forward.
