Ever Stop to Think About How Bedpans Are Cleaned? Yeah, Me Neither—Until Now. Here’s something I never really considered: how are bedpans and portable urinals actually cleaned and disinfected in the USA? I assumed it was some sophisticated process. Turns out, in many places, it’s manual. M-A-N-U-A-L!!! 😧 And let me tell you, how disappointed I was when I learned that. Let’s break it down. Step one: dump the waste into the toilet. Now, remember, most hospital toilets don’t have lids, so healthcare staff are exposed to the lovely plume of contaminated aerosols. Fun, right? Then the bedpan or urinal gets scrubbed by hand and rinsed with disinfectant—or, in some cases, boiling water (per CDC recommendations). A) Awful job. B) Massive risk of exposure to pathogens. C) Ridiculously time-consuming. But thankfully, there’s a better way, and it doesn’t even break the bank. Enter: automatic bedpan washers. This changes everything. For a surprisingly low cost, you get fully automated cleaning and disinfection. Not only is it much less miserable for staff, but it’s also far more effective. When you consider the gains—better use of healthcare staff’s time, better patient outcomes, and less risk of exposure for everyone—why wouldn’t you want one of these in every unit? If it were up to me, I’d be running out to buy them in bulk. The only automatic bedpan washer manufacturer that I found that has recent positive scientific data behind their machines was MEIKO USA. A study published in AJIC in 2020 stated that their bedpan washers delivered a 3.99 Log Reduction (basically 99.99% reduction) of C.diff spores.
