I had a fantastic afternoon joining Jaquie Mitchell on a panel with government officials from various departments and agencies across Malaysia, discussing successful multi-stakeholder processes in agriculture. I shared insights from the development of the Zero Net Emissions Agriculture CRC, which unites over 70 organizations from industry, government, civil society, and academia to collaborate on research, development, and extension (RD&E) aimed at reducing Australia’s agricultural emissions. Key factors for building this successful multi-stakeholder partnership included: 1. Ecosystem Mapping: Understand the landscape and stakeholders involved. 2. Shared Understanding: Alignment among partners on the challenge definition and desired impact to be achieved. 3. Intentional Partnership Design: Create partnerships that focus on delivering the desired outcomes and impacts. 4. Strong Governance: Establish clear management structures and rules for engagement to foster trust and maintain momentum. 5. Invest in Relationships: Remember, multi-stakeholder partnerships are marathons, not sprints; they require significant upfront investment in collaboration and co-design. Make sure you have the funding and team needed to succeed. I hope Malaysian colleagues can draw from Australia’s experiences. I’m eager to learn how they apply the course learnings in #Malaysia and to find out about their best practice insights. Board members from Northern Territory Cattleman’s Association and the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade had the opportunity during the 2024 NT Cattleman’s Association in Alice Springs last week to discuss the importance of our live cattle exports with the Indonesian Ambassador, His Excellency Dr Siswo Pramono. The Northern Territory’s history with Indonesia dates back centuries, embarking in international trade for many hundreds of years. Live cattle to Indonesia continue to dominate Northern Territory agriculture exports, with long term relationships established and continuing to grow. The Northern Territory continues to diversify and establish new two-way trade opportunities with Indonesia to further our economic relationships. The Northern Territory Government’s International Engagement Strategy 2022-2026 identifies Indonesia as a high-priority market to help achieve our ambitions of a $40 billion economy by 2030.

Signing deals can look ordinary especially if you're used to it, but some deals are just extraordinary, and when you see that your little work in your little corner is being noticed by international bodies who are willing to pull resources to work together with you on a bigger level. It's incredible! It was a pleasure signing Agrovesto into agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Project NINJA on project titled: "The Survey on Digitization on the Supply Chains in Small-scale Nigerian farms". This project will commence from 2 states, enabling over 20,000 small-scale farmers boost food production and quality at scale, access profitable local and global markets and ultimately increase their earning power with improved livelihood. Food security is never an impossible mission but a possible one, you only need to put in the right investment. This is what we stand for, and determined to achieve at Agrovesto.

Can commerical smallholder farmers produce for a highly competitive world market and make a decent living out of it? It is a crucial debate for the future of agriculture. In the case of citrus farmers in the value chain of The Fruit Republic in Vietnam, I have seen last week that smallholders indeed can. However, a supportive business environment and a strong international value chain partner may be crucial elements for its success. Elements that the public-private partnership programme SDGP can strenghten. Last week, I had the opportunity to visit the activities of The Fruit Republic in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam and meet several of the farmers and the partners of SDGP-programme SUCCEEDS. In the years to come, SUCCEEDS will support farmers in switching from rice farming to lime and pomelo for the domestic and international market. SEATINI & Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) Urge Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence SEATINI, in partnership with the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), has called on stakeholders in the coffee value chain to adhere to the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive by the EU to maintain an open market for coffee exporters from Uganda. Herbert Kafeero, Programs and Communications Manager at SEATINI, emphasized that Uganda cannot afford to miss out on the EU market. This call to action was made during a stakeholder engagement held at Hotel Africana. On 23 February 2022, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a Directive on corporate sustainability due diligence. On 24 May 2024 the Council of the European Union approved the political agreement, thereby completing the adoption process. The aim of this Directive is to foster sustainable and responsible corporate behaviour in companies’ operations and across their global value chains. The new rules will ensure that companies in scope identify and address adverse human rights and environmental impacts of their actions inside and outside Europe. What are the benefits of these new rules? For citizens 1. Better protection of human rights, including labour rights. 2. Healthier environment for present and future generations, including climate change migration. 3. Increased trust in businesses. 4. More transparency enabling informed choices. 5. Better access to justice for victims. For companies 1. Harmonised legal framework in the EU, creating legal certainty and level playing field. 2. Greater customer trust and employees’ commitment. 3. Better awareness of companies’ negative human rights and environmental impacts, less liability risks. 4. Better risk management, more resilience and increased competitiveness. 5. Increased attractiveness for talent, sustainability-oriented investors and public procurers. 6. Increased incentives for innovation. 7. Better access to finance. For developing countries 1. Better protection of human rights and the environment. 2. Sustainable investment, capacity building and support for value chain companies. 3. Improved sustainability-related practices. 4. Increased take-up of international standards. 5. 🌍 I thank IFC - International Finance Corporation, the The World Bank Group, for inviting me to speak at the 11th International Food Safety Forum in #Tashkent. It was very valuable to engage with local, regional, and global stakeholders, including World Health Organization, World Trade Organization, and UNICEF, to address critical global #foodsafety issues. 📋 My presentation focused on the opportunities and challenges of #Uzbekistan's agriculture and #food exports to the global market. While food safety measures are crucial for the international success of Uzbek products, there are these additional pillars that need to be developed simultaneously for sustainable overseas reach: ✅ Ensuring critical quantity of offered products ✅ Developing product-specific logistical solutions ✅ Training HR for cross-cultural trade communication 🍌 Moreover, I challenged the idea that being landlocked hinders overseas trade. The journey of Jamaican bananas to Uzbek tables stands as proof that distance is but a minor obstacle. Why shouldn’t it be possible for Uzbek products to find their way to distant lands?
