In a recent settlement with the American Alliance for Equal Rights, the Fearless Fund has ended its Strivers Grant Contest, which focused on supporting women of color entrepreneurs. The case brought to light ongoing challenges facing race-based initiatives, particularly those designed to promote diversity and inclusion. Although the contest won’t continue, the Fund is determined to stay true to its mission of supporting minority business owners—just in new ways. For the fourth consecutive year, Wiggin and Dana LLP has provided over $1 million in free legal services to women and minority-owned businesses in communities across the United States through its Wiggin Opportunity Initiative (WOI). Wiggin and Dana launched WOI in July 2020 to help address racial and economic injustices that were highlighted in the public conversation and events following George Floyd’s murder. The firm pledged to provide $10 million in free legal services to women and minority-owned businesses by 2030 to do its part in fueling the success of these businesses, encouraging their proliferation, and increasing diversity among business leaders. The recent appeals court decision to block the Fearless Fund’s grants to Black women is a clear step backward in our collective fight for equity. By preventing these targeted efforts, we hinder progress for Black business owners and reinforce the oppressive systems that have long marginalized their success. This ruling feels like yet another conservative backlash aimed at eliminating initiatives designed to uplift marginalized communities and advance DEI efforts. It's crucial that we recognize this decision for what it is: a direct challenge to the progress we’ve made and a barrier to creating a truly inclusive economy. #DEI #BlackBusiness #EconomicEquity #FearlessFund #KeepPushing
