SCOOP. Orrick shuts down two Asian offices in Taipei and Shanghai in a bid to “rebalance its Asia Pacific platform”, aligning its strengths in energy and infrastructure projects in its Tokyo and Singapore offices. Its IP focus will continue from Beijing (in addition to a corporate offering), where it will accommodate five Shanghai defectors. It’s a story all too familiar. In 2017, Orrick overhauled its Asia strategy after it got raided for a capital markets team. That didn’t work out and the firm eventually closed Hong Kong. A year after closing doors in Hong Kong, it found promise in Southeast Asia and launched in Singapore. Orrick is not alone.

Intellectual property (IP) represents a valuable yet underutilised asset for SMEs and start-ups, I wrote to the newspaper South China Morning Post SCMP. SMEs and start-ups can leverage Hong Kong’s robust legal system, strong IP protection and wealth of IP expertise. New areas like #IP-backed #financing, and other topics like the intersection of IP and technology, IP #commercialisation for creative and cultural industries, as well as opportunities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and ASEAN for IP will be discussed at our #flagshipevent Business of Intellectual Property Asia Forum (#BIPAsia), on 5-6 December 2024 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
