I've been highlighting this for 5 years...Geopolitical lines being drawn leading to foreign law firms, across Asia, leaving. It's over. See my latest video on What's Happening in Hong Kong? as its reflective of the whole region https://lnkd.in/dfkWPSvc
SCOOP. Orrick shuts down two Asian offices in Taipei and Shanghai in a bid to “rebalance its Asia Pacific platform”, aligning its strengths in energy and infrastructure projects in its Tokyo and Singapore offices. Its IP focus will continue from Beijing (in addition to a corporate offering), where it will accommodate five Shanghai defectors. It’s a story all too familiar. In 2017, Orrick overhauled its Asia strategy after it got raided for a capital markets team. That didn’t work out and the firm eventually closed Hong Kong. A year after closing doors in Hong Kong, it found promise in Southeast Asia and launched in Singapore. Orrick is not alone.

Intellectual property (IP) represents a valuable yet underutilised asset for SMEs and start-ups, I wrote to the newspaper South China Morning Post SCMP. SMEs and start-ups can leverage Hong Kong’s robust legal system, strong IP protection and wealth of IP expertise. New areas like #IP-backed #financing, and other topics like the intersection of IP and technology, IP #commercialisation for creative and cultural industries, as well as opportunities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and ASEAN for IP will be discussed at our #flagshipevent Business of Intellectual Property Asia Forum (#BIPAsia), on 5-6 December 2024 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. BIP Asia brings together global IP professionals and business leaders to discuss the latest trends in the dynamic IP market, and explore #businessopportunities across Asia and beyond. Last year, BIP Asia attracted over 2,500 participants from 35 countries and regions. I look forward to seeing you there!

#Singapore has been actively positioning itself as a global hub for intellectual capital, focusing on intangible assets (#IA) and intellectual property (#IP). This strategy is part of the Singapore IP Strategy 2030 (SIPS 2030), which aims to strengthen the country’s position in the global IA/IP landscape. Key aspects of Singapore’s export of intellectual capital include: 1. Development Experience: Sharing its successful development model and governance practices with other countries. 2. IP Management Know-How: Providing expertise in managing and leveraging IP for economic growth. 3. Innovation and Enterprise Growth: Supporting local companies to build innovative capabilities and move up the value chain. This approach not only boosts Singapore’s economy but also helps other countries benefit from Singapore’s expertise in these areas.
